asking if this will be more convenient since laptops with xp are like in the 300s and the upgrade will cost around 100

I believe you can only use the upgrade only on Vista. For xp, you would have to buy the retail version of Windows 7

The $300 ones probably won’t meet vista or windows 7 system requirements.

how about Vista Basic they are about the same price.

Yea i believe vista basic is upgradable. It just doesnt have Aero theme

There are several laptops now that companies sell that have a free upgrade to Windows 7. For example, my HP HDX Laptop has that option and I already ordered mine. It will ship somewhere in October (that’s when it comes out). I would suggest you just do that.

I found this laptop for 500 dollars

2 GHz dual core intel
3 GB DDR2 RAM
320 GB hard drive
15.6 inch screen
3.5 hr battery life
Vista Premium

it sounds like a pretty good deal

Wow, that is a pretty good deal.

Its a good portable laptop that you can do your school work in. Not to mention Asus gives free 1 year of accidental damage. The only downside would be that it has an integrated GPU but thats whats giving the laptop longer battery life.

very cheap, but the single core turns me off…

my single core 2.2 GHz desktop is ok, but 1.6 GHz?

I thought it was a netbook…

I’m kinda annoyed that some laptops don’t come with Microsoft office…

I have a legit copy of Office 2003 and a pirated 2007 version at home though

seems it costs 100 dollars to buy right now

just pirate it. I never buy programs lol

lol I still have office 2003. LOL. Should I switch to 2007 now? Does it REALLY matter?

2007 looks prettier and have more options. It doesnt really matter imo.

If you dont want to pirate, a free alternative would be OpenOffice. Its just as good as microsoft office but its free

They’re coming out with a new office soon anyways…

there are a bunch of free alternatives, but I can’t see myself using them

really? lol i’ll wait til then… then.

yeah i’ve tried the alternatives before… fail. i ran back to my office 03 on the quickness.

OpenOffice isnt that bad…imo its on par with Microsft Office. Many people consider it superior to Office 2007 actually because its an open source. I’d use it if I wasn’t so used to Microsoft Office

I’m just wondering…

is there any noticeable difference between laptop and desktop processors?

I’ve gotten my desktop to play some intensive games, but I’ve no idea as to how laptops would fare, given all the stuff I’ve read about them having trouble playing 3D games and whatnot

not that I want to play those games, but just to see if there’s a difference

I have a AMD athlon 64 bit on my desktop right now, and for the laptop I’m looking at a dual core Intel T4200

I imagine memory would also make a difference, but in a different way

As long as the processor’s Ghz and cache is the same then they are the same thing
