I got a new laptop with vista home basic (separate media not installed yet) but i also bought an xp setup disk in case (i'm used to xp) which should i install?

laptop specs

2.4 ghz intel duo core
2 gb RAM
7200rpm 160 gb hard disk

If you want XP for familiarity, go with XP. If you can manage with Vista, stick with it. Whichever is “better” is quite subjective, so you’re really the best to judge which is for you.

thx adam. i was just wondering if vista has any advantages over xp (i haven’t used vista yet) from the viewpoint of a college freshman. i was just going to use the laptop for the basics, internet, wireless, papers, etc.

If anything, I’d imagine XP Pro has more “features” than Vista Home Basic, though for what you need to do, the two are more or less the same, except for some interface changes. I think XP is less demanding on your hardware, which could be a benefit.

I’m sure others are going to tell you to try out Windows 7. I’ve never tried it, so I have no advice there.

try out vista since that’s what came with your computer. if you don’t like it after testing it out, then just install xp. seems like a simple solution. assuming this is for your school, you have the rest of the summer to see whether or not you like vista. people are going to tell you to go with what THEY like, not necessarily what YOU may like. like another poster said, it’s all subjective.
