Getting a 'W' in a class related to my major?

Hey everyone,

I am currently trying to apply to switch my major to an impacted major, meaning that you cannot just switch into it, but have to apply to get into it and based on your grades in certain courses pertaining to the impacted major, are ranked based on the grades and then selected based on your ranking. I am currently taking a class that will be factored into this GPA; however, I'm considering waiving it. Though I have an A- right now, I did poorly on the second midterm, and have another midterm this coming week. Though only two midterms account for your final grade, as one is dropped, depending on how I think I did on my upcoming midterm, I may waive the class if I think I'm bound to get some grade between the B range. I know many of you may think that's crazy, since a B isnt too bad of a grade and isnt worth waiving after, but I really need to switch my major to the impacted major and dont want to risk getting a B and hurting my chances of getting into the impacted major. If I do waive the course, I plan on retaking it next quarter with a better grasp of the concepts and higher chances of getting an A.

Does anyone have any advice for this? I do not plan on going to grad school right after, as I plan on working in the industry. Will this 'W' look bad since its required for my major? Will retaking a class remove my 'W'?

I also plan on asking my adviser the coming week, but just wanted some outside help

What is ‘waive’? Do you mean Withdraw? A W is much worse than a B. Ask your college if retake removed the W, no one here knows the policies. I suspect that both grades will be recorded, but I don’t know.

W (withdraw) is generally ok as long as it doesn’t impact your GPA negatively. So check college policy. However, WF (Withdraw Failing) is not ok. Some colleges don’t give WFs others do, so again check policy at your college. If you have an A- you should be able to pull out with a W.
