I'm just wondering if there are any other students from the Northeast worried about flights being cancelled on Sunday because of the snow and freezing weather tonight.

I would have changed my son's flight to today, but the dorms don't open until Sunday.

On a positive note, because there is such a high percentage of students from this area everyone will be in the same position and he won't be the only one that may miss the first day of classes.

not much anyone can do about it now, but make sure you keep checking that they don't cancel it without you knowing about it and then put him on a fllight on Wed or something like that....it has happened with snow storms the weekend all the kids go back.....

My husband and I were just talking about sending him through Dallas tonight, and having him wait the 5 hours overnight and then take the earliest flight to New Orleans. Of course he's still sleeping so we haven't discussed it with him, but I know he will be against it (giving up his last night with his friends and girlfriend - we don't exactly have the same priorities)

yea, I guess we have similar kids; My D didn't understand why husband wanted to drive up early this morning rather than tonight....clueless..

Anyway, the other thought I had was to double book on another airline that will allow 24 hr refunds....I know Continental lets you book and then will reverse w/i 24 hours. The other thought was booking a flight out of Philly tomorrow....no snow expected there.....He could take a train from NYC and connect to the airport? just a thought....

^^^^^ Just wondering how your kids fared. Hope all went well. We tried something different yesterday and booked a flight for DS on Southwest from an airport 2 1/2 hrs away, rather than use our local airport (which is about a 1/2 hr drive or so, but is big and crowded. While I wouldn't do this on a regular basis because of the time involved in making the drive to/from the further airport, it was a smoothe as could be, the parking was remarkably close to the terminal, Southwest didn't charge a penny for the two large duffels he took back with him (Airtran charged $39 for an oversized bag when he used one of these to go skiing, though in fairness it was stuffed a lot more when he went skiing than when he went back to Tulane) and we ran into some other folks from right up the street who had done the same thing-- drive the 2 1/2 hrs to fly Southwest. Did I mention the fare we got was....... $39 !?!?!?! The cheapest I saw from our local airport was $119 on sale, but it quickly jumped up to $144. He also ran into a girl from his Ultimate Frisbee team on the flight so they shared a taxi back to campus. He was back in his dorm room before we even got home from the drive back! He did get a text from a friend of his whose flight from Houston to NOLA was delayed b/c they couldnt get the de-icer to work. They didnt' NEED the de-icer (it was plenty warm in both cities), but it wasn't working and it delayed their flight! We had a similar thing happen once- we had to deplane and change planes flying back from Denver to NYC in the dead of winter because the air conditioning didnt work! Who cares!! (I know everything has to be operational, but the irony was killing us!).

Hope all your kids made it back to school safely.

As I expected, my son did not want to leave the night before. We did change his connection from Chicago to Dallas. His flight from NY to Dallas was delayed, and part of me was hoping he would have to sit in Dallas for a long time (for not taking my suggestion to leave before the storm- I wanted it to turn into a "mom knows best") However, his Dallas flight was also delayed so he made the connection and was in his dorm room by 8:30 NOLA time.
