Getting In-state tuition after a year??

Is it possible to become a North Carolina resident after a year and get in-state tuition? I know other schools do this, but for some reason I don't think UNC does...

I would not count on getting in-state status unless you have a very unusual situation. North Carolina intentionally makes it very difficult.

I think your parents would have to be in the state for that first year as well.

My son is an incoming freshman who did his last 2 yrs of HS in Asia. We maintained our home in NC. Last summer they said that if he didn’t get IS, worst case was that he would pay OOS for 1 yr, and then get in state. Our whole family is going back this summer though. Please call and ask. I found that they were more than happy to give you info on your situation.

You have to live in the state for reasons other than education, so being a UNC student won’t give you residency. (Otherwise, how would they get OOS tuition dollars?)

I’d say it’s extremely unlikely.
