I’m a sophomore and I was wondering if I was good enough for a Stanford, University Of Chicago, or JHU
Ethnicty: Black/African American
I have taken 11/16 PreAP classes in the school currently (I will keep taking more next year as a junior and a senior)
Rank: 24/550
UW Gpa: 4.00/4.00
Weighted GPA: 5.555/6.00
PSAT: 198/240 (need to improve on writing)
Extracurriculars: Cross country, debate, NJROTC (went to state championship in NJROTC), African student association, altar server,
Most of the time weighted GPA only counts AP and college creidt classes, not honors and such(for UCs and such anyway). So, if you haven’t taken any AP classes(I’m assuming you haven’t because you only list pre-AP) your UC GPA is 4.0 and your unweighted is 4.0 too.
Being a URM will help but without something special/high SAT, you dont stand much of a chance. I’m not going to chance you with your current stats because you probably realize they need to go way up for your to have a chance(2100/31+ and tons of AP/DE classes(not pre-AP) to be in the middle 50).
No one knows if you are getting into Stanford or not. The question is “are you competitive enough to be seriously considered”? My opinion is that you are teetering on the edge. You need some additional standout successes in your ECs and a good SAT to push you up into the pool.
Gonna go ahead and say that @JustOneDad has it right, but you also need to realize you have two years to do all of this so time is a problem but not a major one.
@reddr0p During my junior and senoir year I will be taking at least 6 out of 7 AP classes each year. Right now as a sophomore my high school doesn’t offer many AP classes except (World History AP). But if I continue to get All A’s and get at least a 220 on my PSAT/SAT … do I have a good chance. Also in my junior and senoir year I will join lots of honor societies and continue playing sports. After this . will i improve my chances. Please give me a detailed account on where I need to improve and where i am good at. Also I would like you opinion on if i should take more extracurriculars activities.
what is a good SAT score? and if I continue taking 6 out of 7 ap classes or maybe even all ap classes for my junior and senoir years and I make all A’s and I get at least at a 2150 on my psat/sat, should i be seriously considered academically wise
@chizzychiznips , you don’t really give enough info for me to recommend where to improve. Unless that’s a list of all your volunteering/ECs since 9th grade then it’s hard to say.
Overall, I’d recommend not working on the SATs(it is important but you’re already doing well enough that prep isn’t necessary.) and just doing things outside of school that seem fun and are productive, for example, you could take up working at a humane society if you love animals, tutoring younger children if you love kids, or starting/running a club if you have one you like. Depending on your state, a 220 on the PSAT will most likely get you NMSF(unless you’re in California basically) and that provides lots of scholarships if you’re looking to go to a state school;however, by the looks of it you’re not really looking for that tho.
Yes, the universities you’re looking at are great but you have to realize that if you’re middle class then your parents will pay a MAJOR part of it and you need to see if they are ready for that. If your parents don’t have the money to pay their EFC(expected family contribution) then you will be stuck with the costs. For example, my EFC is around $35,000 or so, would it be worth it for me to take around half of my parents’ gross income just because I want to go to a high end college? Not necessarily. You should find out your EFC and discuss with your family what they’re willing to pay, and think to yourself how much is a a degree from one of those schools worth to you. Is it $50,000 more than a state school? $150,000? There’s no definite answer but you definitely need to think about it.
You don’t need more ECs. You need to have some standout successes at the ones you have.
