Just wondering what my chances of getting into Amherst College (or other notable East Coast schools) are. I have a 3.98 unweighted GPA, will have taken eight APs by the time I graduate (Calc BC, Lit, Lang, World History, US History, Physics B, Biology, and Music Theory), and project around a 2100 on my SAT and I am taking two subject tests (Physics and Math II) in May. My extra curricular activities include Model UN for two years (I have received several awards in this), horn for seven years (playing in the Wind Ensemble and various honors bands in addition to Solo and Ensemble), cxc ski team for two years, pit orchestra for four years, and NHS. I qualified for National Merit and am waiting to hear if I qualify as a semi-finalist. I am currently trying to convince my school board to put install a green roof on our school. I am still a junior and have taken the most ambitious classes that my school offers. Am I just another run-of-the-mill applicant, or are my chances good?

Please, please get yourself a few non-reaches. Amherst is fine to have as a reach but it is just that: a reach.

When we attended an info session at Amherst, they told the group, “We’re glad you’re visiting, but there’s not much chance you will get in.” Kind of sobering!

Well, they reject more than 75% of their applicants, so statistically that’s correct.
As far as the OP goes. a 2100 is a bottom-of-the barrell score for Amherst and would be a typical score for a hooked applicant. Unhooked applicatants are likely in the 2200+ range with a 2300+ being more typical.

Thanks for the responses! I wasn’t expecting them so quickly. I wanted realistic answers-- I come from a small town where everyone assures me “Oh, you’ll get in,” I have always known the chances were slim. Also, to Catira: Don’t worry. Amherst College is my reach school.
