I’m a high school junior who fell in love with Barnard and plans to go ED next fall. I have very, very low grades from my sophomore year as a result of depression and a family issue with a gender equality suit. My GPA, as it stands, is around a 3.2-3.3. I hope that with this year I can bring it up to around a 3.4-3.5 (With almost all of the most challenging classes my school offers). My SAT’s are on target and I have a lot of unique EC’s and Community Service such as writing for a local Jewish newspaper, creating my school’s book club (Where I am President), attending a leadership training camp all summer, and helping to organize a 2,000 person dinner every christmas for my community’s poor. Is there any hope for me ED? What could I do to help make my chances higher? Thanks!
All colleges require letters of recommendation, and I think those can make all the difference. Check the application to see what they require in terms of types of people. I think they require two teachers and one guidance counselor, but I am not sure. My daughter currently attends Barnard and loves it there. Barnard allowed in person interviews - their admissions staff travel to locations across the US and can do interviews, or, you can arrange for an alumna to interview you in or near your hometown. You might consider requesting an interview, and if you do so, prepare the best you can for it - be yourself, be natural, but be focused - you are advocating for yourself.
If you are accepted to Barnard, you will be able to take classes at Columbia University and also participate in any of their clubs or activities. I can understand why you’ve fallen ‘in love’ with Barnard - it’s an excellent, small liberal arts college and the staff do a great job of serving their students well. Good luck with your future!
Thanks so much for the advice! I really appreciate it. I live in the Tri-State area surrounding NYC and am definitely planning on asking for an interview as well as attending their college planning day in May.
Did your daughter have straight a’s through out high school?
