What is undergrad the acceptance rate of Haas? What is the application process (is it purely objective)?

The acceptance rate is something like 50%, but that is among people who choose to apply. In practice only about 25% of the people who enter Berkeley saying that they want to get into Haas actually do.

The acceptance rate varies, but it usually hovers around 50%.

The application consists of 3 parts.

1) Your grades for pre-reqs, as well as your overall GPA. Although this is the most objective part of the application, they do notice if your grades are trending upwards or downwards.

2) You have to write two personal statement essays. They are both (relatively) short and both require creativity. You want to use this part to display your enthusiasm and persona.

3) Resume (Extra-curriculars + work experience + awards won). This part shows how involved you are on campus, and what leadership roles you have. It’s also a chance to show how serious you are about your interest in business, as well as what hobbies you have.

Hope this helps.

50%, that doesnt sound so bad. Why do pre-haas students display so much worry?

Because there’s a 50% chance that you won’t get the major you want, meaning that you have to pick a different major, which may not be what you’re really interested in. This is different from college admission, where if you didn’t get into one college you can go to another without any big issues.

As someone who applied Haas last year and didn’t get in, perhaps I can add a bit of perspective to your question dohenry. 50% is not a low number, but it’s probably because you are subconsciously (or consciously) comparing it to college admissions rate which is misleading. Berkeley is quite a bit more difficult than almost any (especially public) high school in the state. So, when you think about it, 50% is actually somewhat challenging, because virtually everybody in Berkeley is a decent student and was high-achieving in high school. Like Christopher mentioned, there are a lot of students who planned on applying to Haas but never do. I’d say there are two categories: 1) the slightly interested in business crowd - these people are not too serious about doing business and are usually deterred very early on (maybe even before they arrive at Cal) from applying to haas because it is a lot more effort to apply to Haas than any other major (within l&s). 2) the eager but discouraged crowd - these people are genuinely pretty interested in studying business but due to bad grade(s) in the pre-requisite classes they feel too discouraged from applying. Given the admission comm’s heavy preference on coursework grades, particularly pre-requisite, this mentality is quite understandable.

With all this being said, I do believe getting into Haas is relatively straightforward (in the sense that they are very transparent to what they’re looking for) and very do-able as long as you are focused for the first 3 semesters at Cal.

Just imagine the top 10% of your hs. Now imagine that haas will only accept 50% of them.
