I’m a junior in high school who wants to go to NYU, specifically Gallatin. Previously in high school, I haven’t done that well. My freshman and sophomore year I didn’t try hard and got pretty bad grades, which account for my low GPA. But the first semester of my junior year, I did a lot better than I expected. I’m currently in three AP classes, two Pre-AP, the school’s tennis team, and one elective science class for fun. With this schedule, I got all A’s and one B last semester. I’ve taken all honor classes since the beginning of high school. My current unweighted GPA out of 4.0 is a 3.55. I have decent extra curricular activities. I haven’t taken the ACT/SAT, but my goals are a 32 and a 1350 (out of 1600). What do y’all think, do I have a chance, or do you have any recommendations that I should do to improve my chances? Thanks!
Matt here,
Well, I just received my admittance letter to Gallatin today! I say take the ACT or the SAT, not both (waste of money!!). I got a 32 so you can do what you want with that fact, first try was 31.
I believe that Gallatin looks for self motivated individuals that want to learn for the sake of learning. You have to love learning! Emphasize this on your essays, or maybe say you’re open to everything and undecided.
My junior year I was also in 3 AP classes and sports, this year I stopped sports and took 5 AP classes (bad knees…). You have a good chance to get in, put your heart into the admittance essays, they matter! I’ll put some of my stats down for comparison.
AP Classes: 5 this year!
Leadership Roles: 2, Secretary for Future Business Leaders of America, and Link Crew
GPA: 3.85/4, yours is not bad by any means!
Senior Grades: Straight A’s
ACT: 32, take this one over new SAT lol
Acceptance Letters: NYU Gallatin of course, Marquette University, University of San Francisco
Rejection Letters: Columbia University, Vanderbilt University
I feel you have a good chance! Put your mind to it. Since Freshman year grades may have been lackluster, apply REGULAR decision so 7th semester grades are factored into decision. I feel early decision can hurt because both I and II are based upon performance up to junior year. Try to make a leadership role in a club! Shoot any questions my way, only got few minutes to draft this up. I can share my experience this fall if you stay online.
