Getting into the UCs

Hi, I am currently a junior who has recently taken the SAT and I want to know my chances of getting into UCLA, UCSD, and UC Davis.

My SAT score was not where I need it to be i believe to get into these schools, but I want to know my chances of getting in with them anyways.

Reading section: 620
Math: 620
Writing: 600
Overall: 1840

GPA: 4.1 I am in the IB program and plan on completing the full diploma

ECs: Elected official in Model UN club and a senator of the California region in JSA (Junior Statesmen of America). Also member of Academic decathlon. I volunteer a lot at environment restoration projects

Planning on taking the Bio SAT subject test, math 1 or 2 subject test, ACT, and I im taking the current SAT tomorrow and hope to improve to 2000.

What are the odds of me getting into the schools I mentioned earlier?

Oh and I played varsity baseball my freshman and sophomore years and plan to play this upcoming junior and senior year as well

You may need to get that SAT up to 2100+ or maybe even 2200+ (especially for UCLA)

For UCD, aim for at least 1300+ (SAT+Math)
For UCSD, aim for at least 1400+
For UCLA, aim for at least 1450+

All UC’s are competitive and much will depend upon intended major. Your EC’s and essays are also part of the application review. Your GPA is competitive but you do need to bump up your test scores. If you are at or above the average GPA and SAT scores then you stand a decent chance at an acceptance.

Google the common datasets for each school and look under section C. This will breakout 25th and 75th percentiles for test scores along with the average unweighted GPA and the range of GPA’s of enrolled students.

Your SAT score is holding you back. You’d have a pretty good chance of getting in if you bring it up to atleast 2100, which would require a lot of hard work.

Your UC-weighted GPA will be the most important component in your application, not your test scores. Every UC I visited with my son stated firmly that taking the “most rigorous available” courseload is their first priority. The UC-GPA is based on sophomore and junior grades in the “A-G” academic classes. Your IB program should weight your GPA fully, and over a 4.0 ought to be adequate for most (but not all) departments at UCD. UCLA and UCB expect weighted GPAs well above that, and your SATs are probably low for them. Try the ACT at least once, and re-take the SAT. A bump in your score could put you into competitive range for UCSD, although I’ve heard that they grow more competitive every year. My son got in two years ago: he was an IB student with comparable GPA (weighted); his first round of SAT scores weren’t much better than yours, but his second set were over 2000. He also got into Davis, but not Berkeley. He didn’t apply to UCLA. Don’t fixate on a score increase changing your life, however. An increase of 100 points or more (over 3 tests) is statistically unlikely, and UCLA will remain a reach even if you achieve it.

@Gumbymom is that CR and math score only? I thought UCs looked at writing?

With a 4.1 GPA and 1900-2000 SAT, you’re in good shape for UCD and possibly UCSD as well, but UCLA is very unlikely.

I really think that that SAT is going to be a deciding factor. Specifically, because new applicants keep increasing overall scores every year.

The SAT scores I posted are Math and CR. Since the SAT is switching to a new format, writing will be optional so scores will be out of 1600. I just used the average (CR and Math) scores from last year as targets. It is not known if the UC’s will require the writing portion for Fall 2017, but probably will. If you want to aim for the total SAT score, then 1900+ for UCD, 2000+ for UCSD and at least 2100+ for UCLA. As @auntbea stated, scores keep increasing each year.

UCLA is a huge reach, but you have a good shot at the others.
Good luck. Chance back?
