So I'm just getting into researching colleges in California, even though I'm out of state. I'm a sophomore in high school and I've already become obsessed with the idea of attending UCSB. How likely is it to get in coming from Kansas City? Right now i have a 3.9 weighted GPA(I'm planning to improve it) and I got a really good score on my PSAT. I do track and wrestling and plan on doing some youth programs over the summer. I take AP and honors classes along with spanish. Do i need to do some work as far as improving my stats or am I on the right track?

you’re definitely on the right track, keep it up and youll get in
chance me?

why UCSB? (the beach??)

@myboby123 Always wanted to go to school in California, great weather, beach, beautiful campus, social atmosphere, good academics, also it just seems like the people are friendly and happy there

you are paying a premium for its location not its academic reputation. i don’t think the OOS tuition is worth it. For the same amount of $, you can better bang for your buck at another school such as University of Missouri.

OOS students are very attractive to the UC’s as they bring in extra money for the system. Your stats are good, and if you keep it up you have a very good shot at getting in. Just keep in mind that OOS tuition is very expensive and there is little to no financial aid for OOS students. Run it by your parents to make sure that cost is realistic.

@mybody123 UC schools dont have a good reputation? and i dont think i would want to go to school in missouri

Honestly if you want to go to a school in California you should go to UCLA

@takeitallin thanks, thats good to know. and i think my parents are expecting me to go to an out of state school, so the OOS costs are relatively similar to other schools i might go to

@recklessgasper Yeah i want to but my parents have a problem with me attending college in LA. I don’t know why, but they’re paying for it so there’s really no debating it

for worth paying over $55k a year.

What’s your PSAT score?

@letjustin I took the sophomore one, the “pre psat” so I got projected scores.
Critical reading: 510-610
Above 85% all sophomores

Math: 580-680
Above 94% all sophomores

Writing: 570-690
Above 98% all sophomores

Assuming you get the average of your projected scores: 1820, I’d say (based on the limited information given and the fact that your still a sophomore) that UCSB is a Match/High Match.

Well I’m signing up for SAT prep classes over the summer so that way hopefully I can get more of a safe shot. Also I’m getting a tutor for the one non-AP B I have, so my gpa should be up by the summer. Thanks for the assurance guys.

Dont worry, they arent going to take it into account THAT much

Find a private school in SoCal instead. You’ll get much more value. I recommend USC.

@STheart I think a big factor for me is having a good time at college. I’m not saying I’m just gonna party or whatever, I’m still going to work hard, but for example my brother goes to Dartmouth and he’s stressed out almost all the time. I just think it would be nice with a campus like ucsb and a chance to let relax over the weekend.

Also I’ve heard that med schools don’t take into account your undergrad school, mostly your gpa, which I’ve also heard is good with ucsb.
