My son's top choice is Univ of Michigan and No.2 school is NYU. He is planning to major in Business. I would liek to know what his chances are.
His GPA weighted is 3.91SAT(after super scoring) 2160
We live in NJ
He is going to tak Math Level 2 and English in Oct Sub test
He has a ACT 28 with 33 in Math and 30 in reading but 24 in Science and 28 in writing
He plays Varsity soccer but not a captain, plays violin in the Orchestra, has a small lawn business and volunteers at teh rescue squad for 12 hrs a week
What are his chances of getting into Umich LSA, Umich Ross BBA program?
What are his chances at NYU Stern school?

the unweighted GPA is more important than the weighted GPA, although the weighted GPA shows the amount of honors/AP/IB courses taken, so if that were provided a much better prediction can be made. however, looking at the weighted GPA, it seems a tad low, considering most applicants have a weighted of 4.0+

i personally am applying to NYU and have a 4.512 weighted and a 3.88 unweighted.

i will say though that his SAT score is more than adequate for both schools, so that’s not a problem.

although umich is a public school, i’d say that the difficulty in getting into the business program is about equivalent to stern @ NYU.

i think the only problem is your sons GPA. and i know it’s late to adjust that, but there’s always the essay.

people say i have a pretty good chance, but i’m still doubting myself. on top of my EC’s i also have a 31 ACT (which is still only 25%ile)

your son and i are very similar in the schools in we’re applying to! i’d like to know how he does! good luck!

Thanks for your response. Good Luck to you.
My son’s GPA is a bummer, he didn’t take any APs until Senior year plus has a few Bs in Freshman and Sophomore year that hurt his GPA. Big mistake on hindsight.

Michigan “recalculates” GPA, disregarding freshman grades and assigning each grade a whole letter grad, so A+, A, or A- = A = 4 points; B+, B, or B- = B = 3 points, etc. Any weighting assigned by your school is disregarded, but as HelloColorClear says, the weighting does indicate challenging classes so that helps. Michigan weighs grades more heavily than test scores. Try the recalculation yourself and see how it comes out, measured against the average entering freshman’s Michigan recalculated GPA of 3.8.

As for test scores, that 28 ACT will be on the low side for Michigan—third quartile, basically, which for an OOS applicant is not high. The 2160 SAT is better, but keep in mind that Michigan doesn’t superscore the SAT: highest single-sitting score only.

I’d say based on the limited information you’ve provided your S might have a reasonable shot at admission to Michigan LS&A, but it may be a little on the reachy side; I certainly wouldn’t call it a match. “Preferred Admission” to Ross’s undergrad business program seems unlikely, but most applicants get into Ross by transferring as sophomores after doing well in their freshman year in LS&A, so if he gets in there it’s worth giving it his all.

Michigan does superscore…at least according to collegeboard. I sent in my scores there a few weeks ago and when I selected which tests to send it superscored them (said I had highest on this section from this sitting, etc etc). However, Penn State only looks at one sitting and one sitting was all that was selected.

My post might be a bit scrambled but to summarize (and repeat): Michigan does superscore
