I slacked super hard freshman year (3.0 GPA) of high school and started to pick myself up in the middle of sophomore year. I’ve done the math and am planning to have a GPA of 3.4 or 3.5 by the time I apply. I participate in 4 clubs and organizations that involve leadership and music. I am planning on majoring in music and getting into Steinhardt. I play guitar, drums, bass, piano, vocals, and also compose and record music. What do you think about my chances?
I also had a to retake half of a World History AP class that I failed.
Steinhardt is an audition program – if they want you in the program they will let NYU admissions know, but admissions has say over the academic admit. Keep your grades up and do really well on the SAT or ACT. They told us at my son’s audition that they don’t just want amazing musicians, they look for kids who enjoy academics with a global perspective. Good luck!
Audition/portfolio programs in Steinhardt (and Tisch) are test optional.

Applicants to programs in our Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development and our Tisch School of the Arts requiring an audition or portfolio are not required to submit standardized testing for consideration and doing so is entirely optional. For other programs where an audition or portfolio is optional but not required, testing is required.
