Any tips for those of us on the WL?

i dont know how much you can affect the process-i was a waitlist admit and i didnt really do anythign (like sending letters, more stuff, etc)

bver100, how long was it until you got notification that you were taken off the waitlist?

I think you have to wait and see how many spots open up when some students choose schools other than NU. They don't have to decide until May 1st so you'll know btw now and then. I don't think you can do anything to impact the decision; I think it's a #s game now.

p.s. get comfortable with the idea of one of your other schools while you wait, just in case.

Good luck though. I hope you get in since NU is where you want to be!

im kind of confused on how the waitlist works x.x so if someone who was admitted rejects the school, a person from the waitlist is given the spot? cuz they said in the past 5 yrs waitlist admits have ranged from 0-200 and it just doesnt seem very likely that in a particular year everyone accepted attended.

yeah wintersilk, when did you find out?

Well what most colleges do is they accept more students than they have spots for. Say they have 2,000 spots and they might accept 2,100 or something like that. They know that for some people their college isn't their first choice and others will just decide to attend elsewhere. What they hope happens is that somewhere around 100 reject the offer of admissions so they can reach their goal of 2,000 for the incoming class. The waitlist (to my understanding) is used if the number of students who accept the offer of admission is below 2,000. So not everyone will accept the offer and attend but there is a chance that NU might reach their target range in terms of number of students and therefore won't need to turn to the waitlist.

Good luck though!

Sorry to mislead. I applied ED and was speculating about the waitlist.

I had given up and didnt do anything and then i got in...

my experience; not that im recommending it

I'm planning on writing a letter to NU stating that I'm still interested (but not bind myself to them if they take me because I don't know how much FA they'll offer). I'm on spring break right now, but I can get hold of my counselor and one of my senior teachers to possibly write a letter updating on my progress. Would this be okay? I don't want annoy NU's admission department ...

when i got the letter there was no finaid stuff for a week, then i emailed them, and then i got the package online and it was about the same as my non-WL colleges

i found out around may 13th or so. if you decide to drop another school's offer to pick up a waitlist (this is general info) you might have to forfeit the $100 deposit (or w/e it is). My year i think there were 12 waitlisted students (they have the stats posted somewhere)

I'm planning to write a letter/ get one of my sophomore teachers to write a rec for me.

Getting another recommendation letter? Is that really necessary? Unless the new rec writer can say something about you that your others haven't, I don't see the point.

Ok so I'm flying out to Atlanta because there's an admitted students thing for Emory next week and on the way back, I got the airline to give me a day-long stopover in Chicago, so I think I can visit NU's campus. I'm planning on visiting some classes and checking out the campus more in depth. Any other suggestions?

Great idea! When is NU's spring break?

First thing I'd do is get a map of campus so you don't have to keep running to a kiosk to get oriented or to try to figure out how to get to a particular building - take it from me, it's annoying and a huge waste of time - haha. You may find one in your admittance packet, I can't remember, but when I went back I didn't have one and no one else did either (it was over some break, but the bookstore was open!)

If you want to take a class or two, call ahead. You may need to make special arrangements unless you are going at a time set aside for newly accepted students (I went to Discover NU, held on a weekend but the program went through a Monday so I was able to sit in on classes).

Walk the campus from end to end, eat lunch in Evanston to get a feel for the town, look at the gym, visit your department and see if you can talk to anyone who can answer your pre-prepared list of questions. Get a feel for the people. Does it feel like a place you belong?

If you have a few hours to spare, treat yourself to downtown Chicago. Ahhhh, it's a lovely city indeed.

Your trip is a great plan and I'm betting your choice, whatever it is, will be clear after you take this trip. Safe travels and let us know what you think. You can fill out one of those CC "college visit" forms. I'm sick of reading the same 7.

Good luck! Have fun!

Go to this link: http://www.northwestern.edu/newstudentweek/

Then go to the guide for "new students" link on the same page and if you scroll way down, you'll find a map of NU. Hopefully, it can be printed off of the site, but if not, you can ask around and someone else can tell you where to find a map.

bhavanig. not so much a recommendation letter but more like an update of what i have been doing second semester

wintersilk, spring break was two weeks ago =)

hee hee. thanks for letting me know. at least s/he will be there when classes are in session!
