Getting off the waitlist..?

What can I do to improve my chances on the waitlist? I've people say you can write a letter expressing your continued interest in the school and about any new awards/recognition/etc you've received, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about this. Thanks for any help :)

Interest almost anywhere is encouraged. Which schools are you referring to? I know some college encourage additional information, while others have a strict mind-set of materials that they prefer, like only updated grades.

Few people have updates anyways, but if you feel like you have done something impressive, I may include it in the letter. I’d write a letter emphasizing your interest, why it is a fit, and how you can be advantageous to the campus- basically a why letter, with a twist.

Another option, if you are able, would be withdrawing FA. At some schools this could help you a lot at getting off the wait-list.

Any insight in getting off the Tulane, NYU, BU or BC waitlists?

ATLs-- Thanks for the input! I’m trying to earn a spot at Barnard.

chinablue, Withdrawing FA would work with I think all of those colleges, (maybe less so for NYU because they likely would give little aid anyway) so would interest letters. NYU probably would care less for interest though and value updates that may have caused concern in the initial process. If any of these are schools you would definitely go to no matter what if accepted, expressing this commitment in a letter could also help.

I wouldn’t send new recs for the fact that if they are really great and would help, you would have sent them in the initial process. Updating your resume could benifit if recognitions are very impressive…but you will have to check with the individual schools to see what they prefer.

Calling to ask what is an acceptable addition for your app could also answer this and “kill two birds with one stone”- you would know what to send, and directly emphasize your concern/interest to admissions.

I am not sure we could forgo FA. Still, my S is going to send interest letters and maybe have our GC call BU. What do you think?

articlights, ok barnard!- check out this link:

[Barnard College Admissions](http://www.barnard.columbia.edu/admiss/applying/wl_faq.html)

It would definitely be in your interest to send a letter of interest to the dean. In addition, they are a school that would value additions to your application. Just make sure the new information is new, not repetitive! I

Chinablue- most people do not have this luxury to forgo FA. However, people that do seem to be taking advantage of that this year.

Rather than your GC calling, I would suggest your S call them himself. This is much more impressive and expresses interest much more directly. Many colleges are more impressed by the impression given off by students calling themselves because it puts off that sense of independency and maturity- as well as personal enthusiasm for the school by taking the time to call rather than making your counselor do it for you!
