Getting off the waitlist

I was waitlisted at four of my top choices, including Amherst and really don’t know what to do about any of it.
I understand that I should send a letter of interest, but what do I include in it, and who do I even send it to? Should I send in additional recs? Anything else I can do to increase chances?
Any advice is immensely appreciated.

I was waitlisted by Amherst too and I sent in my letter of continued interest literally two hours ago. LOL

I’m no expert but I think this is what I think the letter should include: (obviously) your continued interest in the school, why the school is a good fit for you, any updates or recent awards you’ve won since the submission of the application. I personally include a promise that I would attend if taken off the waitlist too. (I don’t recommend you do this if you aren’t serious about it)

Good luck to both of us!

Thanks for the information!
Who exactly did you send it to? Should I find the admissions representative for my area and email it to them?

I could not find the list of regional admissions representatives anywhere so I sent it directly to the dean.

Do you send the letter by email or postal mail?

^ I sent the letter by mail. And if I remember correctly, you got accepted already right…?

Yes, but I’m waitlisted elsewhere … places I would drop all of my current offers to attend.

Last year Amherst did not go to their wait-list. All of the above is reasonable, but you should start to seriously explore/decide among the schools at which you were accepted (and hopefully get psyched).

For what it’s worth, Amherst did not go to its waitlist last year as it seriously over enrolled; more students accepted their offers than the College expected. For that reason, the College admitted fewer students this year, so it is not unreasonable to expect that they will be turning to the waitlist.

Thanks for the suggestion. For the record, Amherst did accept 3 people off the waitlist last year (a infinitesimal number, I know) according to their common data set. And as ACKB12 brought up, Amherst accepted 170 less students than last year, so it should be reasonable to expect a decent number of people be taken off this year.
