Getting ready for junior year and college searching

Hey CC, I'm a sophomore at boarding school whose occasionally taken some peaks at the College Admission section of the forum. I've taken some looks at colleges (no particular ones in mind) and admissions, hoping to get some advice on how to make myself a more competitive applicant for junior-senior year.

I currently have a 3.6 uw GPA in my school, and I am taking the only honors courses my school offers for sophomores (math, second language, and science). I'm currently on the advanced math track to take calculus bc as a senior, and also will have completed all offered courses for my second language by next year. I'll be taking 3 AP classes as a junior, and most likely 4 more as a senior. My weakest classes right now are honors chem and english, which I've been consistently getting B's in. I gradually improving every semester, so I hope my GPA be much higher next year as a junior.

My EC's are rather weak. I've been running XC and Track since freshman year, hoping to get a varsity letter before I graduate. My only non-sport EC's are math team and school newspaper, which I only joined during the winter.

As you can see I'm still pretty uninvolved outside of sports and school, I don't really know what else there's I can do though, even though I feel like there's enough time to do something else. I know colleges like to see kids who are really active and take many leadership positions/roles, so I'm hoping to get some suggestions that would point me in the right direction. Thanks!

bummpppppp.

What kind of schools are you looking at? Chances are you can easily sail into an average state school. Are you ok with that, or are you trying for something more?

Since we don’t know which school you attend, it’s difficult to evaluate the context of your application. At Exeter, for example, you’d stand a great chance of admission at some highly ranked schools; at another boarding school, that GPA may be less impressive.

Your best bet is to talk to your guidance counselor, who is going to be much better acquainted with how students from your school do in the admissions process.

I go to a T20 new england prep school (a step lower than Exeter, probably ranked 11th in New England). It’s relatively prestigious and has a very solid history of college matriculation. I’m not really looking into state schools, more into competitive private institutions. I know my current stats aren’t good enough to get me into HYPS, T10 schools, ivies, etc. which is why I’m looking for some advice as to how I might potentially get at least somewhere remotely close to that realm. I’m currently on spring break and my guidance counselor isn’t around, so a little early help might be helpful.
