Often people post that there is some problem with a transcript or a young person worries that admissions reps won't understand how his/her school grades/ranks/weights, etc.

For students who will be going through the admissions process this fall, this is a good time of year to request a transcript and make sure that it is correct. Junior years grades are posted and senior year classes should be listed very soon.

I asked for official transcripts (stamped, sealed) for scholarship applications, but requested one more than I needed, so I would have one to open. This also should give you any profile that a school sends to colleges, so you can get an idea of how your school's policies might impact your application.

What state are you in? In the states that I’m familiar with (quite limited) school administrators and staff do not have summers off like the teachers do.

Yup, our building offices are now closed until August, the district business office is open but they would advise to wait until the building offices reopen in August. My guess is they would be happy to accomodate later in the summer before school is in session if you happen to be in a state where school offices close for the summer break.

Our small private is staffed mornings 4 days a week except for a week in mid-July.

That said, I’m not sure when they’d be ready to accommodate this request. But it’s a terrific suggestion, and I plan to touch base with D’s GC to see when the time is right.

Definitely want to make sure there are no errors/omissions…wouldn’t that just make this whole process even more fun? :)

I went through this transcript process last summer for S1 because his stats were not very strong and I was obsessed with having him send in a couple of apps during the summer to his rolling admissions schools.

First I sent an email and I got the “out of office” reply which also stated that they would not have regular hours, but would be in and out during the summer. It is a private school and I have volunteered there enough to have made friends with a couple of the school secretaries. Once I figured out when our GC would likely pop it, I just showed up and made my request. OMG, you’d think I asked for the impossible. “well, we usually don’t release the transcripts until we have met with each senior during Sept or Oct; well, we are not yet prepared with this years school info packet” It went on and on…She relented when she finally realized that I wasn’t about to give up. What I did learn was that as a parent I am entitled to a transcript copy whenever I make a request, but before they can send them to a college they need your child’s signature.

See if the profile is on their website. My D’s school had them available online and we were able to use them to understand how they report things like how many AP classes are offered, etc

Last year I was looking at the transcript carefully, trying spreadsheet-ize it to better understand the weighting. Lo and behold I noticed that son got awarded credit for Drivers’s Ed twice, once in the spring when we sent in the certificate (it’s held off campus at night) and then again when the records were sent to the school in bulk. We got it corrected. One unweighted A brought down his gpa a tad, and two of them a did so a double-tad. He didn’t need the credit, but still glad he had the course!

Our school is putting more and more online. Not sure if transcripts are there yet though. Hmmm… time to make sure one got sent to the college.

I called the school in August when we scheduled an on-campus interview and was able to pick up an unofficial transcript to carry with us, just in case we needed any information. There was an error in his previous year’s chemistry grade. I went through my stacks of papers (I always knew there was a reason for saving those reports!!) and found his report card. I am sure that it would have been changed eventually but having the old report card probably made it easier since the teacher was no longer at our school.

^^Your HS gives credit for driver’s ed? Wow! Glad you caught the error, but most colleges wouldn’t use that in their calculations. (And they always recalculate to eliminate most electives).
