Getting research position

anyone have good tips on getting a science research position in maybe the neuroscience or stem cell field or know anyone doing research in either of those 2 and how they feel about it? any way to start with actual research and not mainly lab equipment washing? ty!

found a website with some info (<a href="http://www.mcdb.ucla.edu/undergraduate/info_impression.php)%5B/url%5D">http://www.mcdb.ucla.edu/undergraduate/info_impression.php)</a>. has anyone taken that ls10 or hc70 class or is minoring in biomedical research? thoughts/experiences? gracias

(:( should have edited my last post whoops)

from the previous threads about research, it says that one has to start w/ washing equipment, unfortunately. :( i hope it's not true!

omg DWM posting in a thread thats not over a year old??

Do you know precisely what you want to research? Do you have a specific topic or 'problem' you want to tackle, in mind?

If not, you might as well be washing the glassware.

go to the appropriate department website. the psych dept, for instance, has links to its current research projects and info on how to contact the professors in charge... i'd imagine other depts have something similar. also try the advising offices as they might have brochures or flyers on research.

im deeply flattered youd go through the troubles of making a new account to answer my q :) (these smiley faces are neat-o). i think im just going to apply for the minor when its accepted again and hopefully get into a lab through that

liyana i actually tried emailing some of the stem cell labs i was interested in and... no response yet... its been 2 months and i dont think ill be getting any. ill keep an eye out for flyers though thanks!

lol why are we still awake...

sugar rush from holiday cookies? xD

i had a huge dinner and fell asleep the whole evening so its like morning/day to me! and i got serious $$$ this year! $>>>>an actual present

hahaha. you can use it on textbooks =P

which i am at the moment trying to find the right versions of beats head against wall

as for me, i'm on hawaii time, so it's only 2am to me lol.

 No one has to start by washing dishes- what a ridiculous statement. Check your pm OP

I went to the faculty research interest website and found the project that I'm currently working on - I got lucky and only e-mailed one person, who happened to have a position open. Just looking around.

thanks that really helped with my decision! :)

FYI I'm doing work with atomic force microscopes (AFM) and scanning tunneling microscopes (STM) with some more biology related stuff to follow once the guys get the materials together and the machines built

lol nvm deleted my post :D

So what I've gathered is: go to department websites and find research projects with professors to e-mail.

Is e-mailing a professor/contacting them directly about their research the only way to do it here? I was under the assumption there was like a list of research professors were doing that you could find at the department office and apply directly to the office and get placed.

I'm not asking to be lazy, just wondering if that was indeed an option or if I just made it up..

You can look up "URC CARE SRP" and there's a PDF list that's updated regularly during the quarter with projects. Google "UCLA faculty research interests" while you're at it.

to what extent would i need both clinical AND laboratory experience for med school?

also, what do you guys think about these programs: care extenders, Emergency Medicine Research Association, and STROKE? i got rejected the first time i applied to all of them. :( what other programs are out there to apply? are most of them filling out an application, which includes essays, on the spot like that?

does anyone have any clinical or laboratory experience outside of UCLA such as other hospitals? do you advise it? i'm looking into that too like the ones by my relatives places in pasadena. i feel like all of the UCLA positions are really hard to get into after being a reject.

i also heard that the care extenders volunteers are not treated well, but can anyone accept or reject this claim for me? thanks.

Clinical experience is much more important than lab experience for med school, full stop. Unless you are applying for MSTP or similar there is absolutely NO REASON to accumulate lab experience. It just doesn't look as good as volunteering at a hospital, shadowing a doctor, etc., do.

what ive been told is that its quality and not quantity that matters, and that clinical experience is just as mandatory as any of the course requirements, while MEANINGFUL research experience is expected even if its just for a short while to at least show you tried it if you plan on applying to any top school and want any shot in hell unless EVERYTHING else you have like grades, test scores, AND ECs are beyond phenomenal (and not the cookie cutter type) or youre an URM
