Thank you in advance :)

Please guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bates has a stronger reputation.

Any comments are welcomed!

I would be glad to hear smthng from people who picked to go to either of schools and why? Not neccesary to pick between them.

Please guys, it's very important for me! Those who already attend the schools can say their opinions!!!

I can't speak with any authority regarding either school, as I didn't attend--or even apply. However, I know people who went to both. These observations might be outdated as I applied to ugrad institutions six years ago.

Bates is solid liberal arts school--generally ranked in the top 25, (along the lines of Colby or Connecticut College.) It'd probably rank higher except it has a small endowment. It leans left politically. One of my friends earned a Fulbright scholarship there. (Other colleges that he considered were Wesleyan, Oberlin, and Bard.)

Gettysburg leans right politically. When I was at boarding school applying to colleges, a counselor was known to say, "if you don't get into any schools, you can always go to Gettysburg or Lake Forest." In other words, it was known as a place where prep school underachievers went; however, it's reputation might've changed... Those I knew who attended Gettysburg--back in the day--weren't overly bright. (Definitely a subjective, and perhaps non-representative sample of its student body.)

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks for the reply JuJu!

i agree with juju's assessment.
gettysburg is a solid school, but bates has a much stronger academic reputation. bates is definitely more liberal

What do you mean by more liberal?
And my other question is why nobody ever talks about Bates? As I see people mention Gettysburg more often, as well as other schools ranked closer to Bates.

Also, which has a stronger math, econ departments?

I think you are asking questions a bit late and from very far away. I am not sure what your frame of reference is but at this point if you have been accepted at both and are choosing on the basis of which has an academically stronger student body and reputation I would say,as before, Bates, no contest. It may be that you have heard the name Gettysburg more because the town was the site of a very famous battle in the American Civil War and also has some connection with President Dwight David Esisenhower who was president of the United States from 1952 to 1960 and had a home near the town. The college itself is not particularly well known or prestigious though certainly it has well-educated professors and undoubtedly some good students; it is not my intention to speak negatively of the school except you keep asking for comparisons and seem to have very little background knowledge. I have been to visit Bates several times as a prospective parent and think quite highly of it. Both my children applied and were accepted; they chose to go to other liberal arts colleges--that is an educational term, not a political one, incidentally, not related to the earlier discussion on this thread about "liberal" politics--but liked Bates very much. Neither would have considered applying to Gettsyburg becasue students of their achievement level at their high school simply did not think of it as being a place for students of that caliber. That does not mean there are not good students there, just that its reputation is not as strong and that it is perceived as a less academic school.

Neither Bates nor Getttysburg is a school at the very top of most poeople's awareness; you will probably be able to get a good education at both. Whether you will be happy or comfortablr at either I have no idea. I think you should try to get in touch direclty with both schools this week if you need specific information prior to making a decision, beucase you are not likely to get much more help on this forum than you already have.

Your reply helped mattmom, thank you

I have recently visited Gettysburg twice and will probably attend next year.

I got a very nice scholarship from Gettysburg, and also enjoyed my visits. The school has gotten more competitive in the last couple of years, I think the acceptance rate last year was 25% lower than that of it in 2000. This year, they accepted 35% of applicants. I think this sort of debunks a comment that another user made that people who don't get in anywhere can go to Gettysburg. With only a 35% acceptance, it certainly does not seem that everyone who applies gets in.

I talked to many students and professors while I was there, and everyone seemed very intelligent. My program (physics) seems like it will be able to offer me lots of opportunities for research. I talked to a student there who turned down Harvard for Gettysburg because he got a full ride to Gettysburg, but Harvard gave him little money. He seemed to really being enjoying his education at Gettysburg.

That being said, Gettysburg is very preppy and has little diversity. But from what I have seen, its academics seem to be very good.

I would generally agree with Juju's statement and would think Bates is academically more highly regarded. I would view Bates as a top 20 LAC and Gettysburg as a top 40 LAC, although the student bodies at the two seems to have fairly different mentalities.

You made me view things more optimistic Fandangoya, since you plan to major in science. You all guys are being helpful!
