I'm currently a Senior in HS, about to graduate, and my college decision has been narrowed to Dickinson and Gettysburg. I think I want to major in history and was wondering which school has a better history program? But, I also want to keep my options open to other majors as well.
Also, aside from history, any other differences or suggestions on how to make a decision between these two schools?

Gettysburg, PA is one of the most historic locations in the world. Not sure about Carlisle, PA

my brother goes to dickinson and carlisle is a small, old town that seems pretty nice but doesnt have a lot in the way of nightlife or anything.
honestly, they seem like very similar schools with similar campuses and facilities. i would recommend doing an overnight at both and deciding which you like better.

Just a few quick observations - Gettysburg is known for it’s history program - particularly civil war history. Dickinson has worked to establish a niche as having an international flavor - for example - rather than offering generic business, it is international business. My impression is that Gettysburg is more Greek oriented and also more sports oriented. Both are great schools - you really have to visit both to see the subtle differences.

History did you decide?

My son is a freshman at G’Burg and I agree with Rockvmom. They are very similar schools; it will come down to fit. Rest assured that you have two very nice schools to choose from.

I know little about Dickinson but can tell you the History Department at Gettysburg is First Class. There’s also a minor available in Civil War Studies for anyone, not just history majors.

I have 2 sons, one attended Dickinson and the other Gettysburg. Our son at Dickinson was a history major and had a wonderful experience. Their history program was exceptional, many of the professors are from the War College in Carlisle. He graduated in 2008 and has a terrific job. He has many wonderful lifelong friends from Dickinson.

Our second son graduated in 2010 from Gettysburg and also received a very good education. He was a double business/ German major and studied in Germany during his Jr. Year. Gettysburg is a very frat/sorority oriented school and he enjoyed living the fraternity life.

All in all I think we liked Dickinson the best. The administration was undeniably the best, always visible and supportive. Although president Durden will be retiring in 2013, I am certain he will be replaced by an equally competent and caring successor.
My 3rd child a daughter will be attending Loyola this fall.
