Gilbert and Sullivan?

I have searched forever around this forum and I haven't found the answer to the following question, but I may have just been looking in the wrong places, so if I am mistaken in thinking that there isn't already a discussion about this, then please direct me to the topic. I apologize in advance if that is the case.

Now, onto my question(s):

I am a high school senior preparing to audition for a musical theater major at the University of the Arts, the Hartt School, and Marymount Manhattan (it would be a MT minor in MM's case). I am a soprano and have been involved with many Gilbert and Sullivan productions over the span of my high school "career" (my singing teacher also specializes in classical voice training), therefore I thought it would be a good idea to sing an aria from one of their shows for my ballad (I was thinking "Sorry Her Lot" from H.M.S. Pinafore) for my musical theater audition.

Now I have done some research and found that U of A is all for an operatic aria, but I'm not sure about the Hartt School or Marymount Manhattan. Both of them simply say "standard musical theater repertoire" and "no pop operas or rock musicals".

This may sound like a silly question, but are operas included in the "standard MT repertoire"? Do they allow operatic arias at their auditions?

Your help is much appreciated! Thanks!

I think many schools would be happy to hear some G&S - but my second song would be, perhaps an uptempo “standard” musical theatre piece - something along the lines of “If I Were a Bell” from Guys & Dolls or “I’m in Love With a Wonderful Guy” from South Pacific - or any number of standard MT repertoire. What I would seriously consider, in your particular case, is to call the school and ask what they specifically would want/allow. It would be better to get from the “horses mouth” rather than from opinions of folks not directly connected to the school(s) you are auditioning for. Hope you do well!

Thank you for the advice! I’ll definitely give them a call (I don’t know why that didn’t cross my mind before.) And those are also some good recommendations for standard MT pieces. Thanks!
