Barnard does offer good need-based aid (not merit-based, ie “scholarships”). Their financial aid is totally separate from Columbia’s and, as others have said, Barnard’s endowment is not as large as Columbia’s. They will look at your family’s finances and most likely will offer a combination of grants, loans and work-study accordingly. It made it do-able for us financially.

In fairness, I think Jose4Jesus was asking whether Barnard has the same no loan, full tuition policy as Columbia does for families earning under $60K a year – see [url=How Aid Works | Columbia Financial Aid and Educational Financing]Press Release | Columbia University Office of Undergraduate Financial Aid and Educational Financing/url.

Columbia has promised almost a full ride – with the exception of student work expectations – for families with incomes under $60K.

Barnard does not have a similar policy. A family earning $55K would be asked to pay at least several thousand dollars toward tuition; and the student would have loans as well as work study.

I do agree that Barnard is generous compared with many other colleges, but I think that the reason that Jose4Jesus used the word “scholarship” is that Columbia’s aid policies do go beyond calculated need in many cases.

We should be hearing back REALLY soon now…I think that this coming week is a possibility for responses ): I have no idea what to expect…!

@jisunz I thought we were supposed to hear around Dec 15?

Yup, I wouldn’t expect to hear back until the 14th at the earliest if you’re close to Barnard.

I’m international so I’m going to be receiving an email…don’t know how soon that would come though :s I’ll let you guys know for sure!

@raspberi… On the commonapp page, my counselor link is NOT under “Barnard College” but a little bit further up the page under “recommenders”. Here’s my link: http://i52.■■■■■■■.com/oii3pg.jpg.

@Jose4Jesus Columbia and Barnard operate on two completely different financial aid budgets. As far as free rides go, unfortunately Barnard can’t offer the same benefits as Columbia I know, it sucks right? Columbia’s endowment is five times that of Barnard, so they have more resources at their disposal. As far as I know (I’ve spent a lot of time on the phone w/ the financial aid office), there is no chart approximating how much money you’ll get from Barnard based on your family’s income, like there is at Columbia and Princeton.

Hi girls!,
My name is Olivia Aylmer, and I applied ED to Barnard in October…and cannot believe that within a week (literally), we will know our Barnard fate! I can’t stop thinking about it! I recently discovered this thread and was so relieved to find that all of you are experiencing the same mix of worries, excitement, paranoia as I have been since sending in my app. Now that there’s only a week to go, I want to wish all of you the absolute best of luck. I sincerely hope to meet all of you this summer!!
Anxiously yours,
Olivia

I emailed the admissions office again since decisions come out in about a week and all of my forms are still not in the office! Is anyone else as freaked put about this as i am?

omg justwanttogetin1 yesss! One of my teachers ended up having to mail her forms in and email her letter. They confirmed they got the email but it still doesn’t have hers on the tracker. My counselor letter, too!

@smartundecided Here’s what I see. That’s weird that it looks different from yours. Why could Barnard possibly not have gotten the letter? [Link to picture](http://i51.■■■■■■■.com/nesymd.png)

My SAT still isn’t in but my ACT is so I guess that’ll have to do.

Aaah stressful. Plus a mountain of homework and possible strep throat and insurmountable scheduling issues that means someone will definitely kill me this weekend…yay.

Under a week… I’ve been noticeably more tired lately and I’m doing anything to get my mind off Barnard. (Even gulp doing homework!!). I would do homework even if I wasn’t worried about Barnard, and I’m still doing homework FOR Barnard (just in case I get gasp waitlisted and have to send in my midterm grades). Therefore, I’m still thinking about Barnard even when I’m doing something to try to get my head out of Barnard. So, basically I’m pulling my hair out at this point. Can you imagine waiting until April? Shivers.

Olivia- Good luck to you too! I really hope I’ll see you and everyone here next fall. Fingers crossed!
Raspberi & justwanttogetin1- They still don’t have my HS transcript and counselor rec, but my SAT scores finally appeared yesterday. I think they’re just backlogged-- don’t worry. My counselor called the Barnard office and the lady who answered told us that they were a little behind in processing forms, and that they would contact you directly if there was anything missing!
smartundecided- it took me until 9pm yesterday to start homework, not to mention I haven’t even looked at RD applications yet. Also, school just keeps piling on the essays and tests. This is going to be a long holiday break for me. : I decided this morning to just focus on my work and stop thinking so much. We’re here for you! Haha.

Should we be expecting the letters tuesday or wednesday?

3.85 unweighted
mostly ap classes and 32 on act
hbu?

koukla- My GPA’s on the low range for Barnard… 4.32 Weighted. ): I looked at stats for people who got accepted to Barnard from previous years from my school and it’s a 4.6something. Which is why I won’t be too disappointed/surprised if I don’t get in. 2250 SAT. School doesn’t let us take APs until 11 and 12th grade really, so in total I have 5 AP classes.
I hope saying scores doesn’t make anyone uncomfortable or nervous, by the way!

I’d just note for anyone else reading this thread that those stats would be specific to your school only. I doubt that my daughter could have gotten a 4.3 in high school even if she had taken every AP offered – which she didn’t – but it just wasn’t mathematically possible. I think she had a weighted GPA of 4.1 something, unweighted around 3.8 (accepted RD). But my d’s class rank was in the top 3% - so I assume that Barnard’s ad com is looking at school profiles to get a sense of grade distribution.

I just want to make sure that your post doesn’t scare off others who, like my d may be coming from schools where a 4.6 GPA or even a 4.3 is totally impossible. High schools tend to have very different practices when it comes to weighting grades.

I do think you might be selling yourself short – with a 4.3 GPA and 2250 SAT I’d think your ED chances are excellent.

Yes, sorry guys for not clarifying, my school’s a pretty competitive public school with weird GPA calculations. Haha.
Thanks, calmom, I feel slightly better. I guess we’ll all know next week!
Jaden239- I remember a lot of ED applicants last year got their letters on the 14 (tuesday for us)… wow, I didn’t really realize it was so soon. :)

The admissions office emailed me back today and the reason half of my application was missing was because they had two files for my application. When I tracked it online it only showed half of my app, but the other half is there! What a relief that was. Now I just have to wait…

Hmmm…I emailed the women I’ve been talking to, just following up because we had been talking about my missing forms, and she was like “no, you’re fine”. I feel like I got rejected so she doesn’t even care about the forms. Ugggggh. Well guess I better get started on all those other supplements…
