Hi guys, so I'm an idiot, I applied to be the representative for my school's Girl State and I also applied for the UT at Austin EFL... it turns out I got into both and I can't attend one of them because they're at the exact same times; i had chosen the dates to be the same on purpose because I honestly thought I wouldn't get into one of them (especially Girls State)... but I guess I thought wrong.

Which do you think looks more prestigious for applications?

Depends on what you plan on majoring in or the program you plan on attending later. It can also compliment other EC’s. Like I’d go to the Economics thing if you were vice president of your FBLA or something.

So it’s really up to you. Factor in cost and also how hard it is to get into both.

Don’t just do it cause it looks good on a resume but make sure you’re gonna learn something from it. If you’re a real feminist inside or something, go for the Girl’s State and write a really good essay for college apps about it.

That’ just the thing I’m so confused…

I spent the first two summers going to a math camp because I thought I wanted to be an engineer/math major… however my second summer, a lot of things went wrong camp and it made me lose all interest in becoming a math major lol, the sucky thing is that I wasted two summers going to a math camp

However, I recently started my own BPA club and my own small tutoring company and I’m really interested in business. In addition, I also had an Ah-mazing APUSH teacher and he really inspires me to a point where I am interested now in politics/economics/law.

Btw, do you think colleges won’t mind a student changing aspirations in the middle of their high school career? I’m afraid it wont make me look “focused” enough, as if I’m trying too many different things when in reality, I’m just trying to figure out what I really like.

I have never heard of economics for leaders, but Girl’s State is one of those programs that every state has and every college admission officer should be familiar with. When I talked to the admission officer’s at UVA she was very passionate about Girl’s State and how such a good program it is.

But, like everyone else said the decision is yours and I would pick the program that best fits your interest. Colleges understand you grow and change during high school just remember to keep somethings consistent whether it is a community service club, or being active an SCA. It lets them know what you are passionate about.

My son went to EFL - excellent program. He enjoyed himself. He learned a lot. He is even thinking about major in Economics. He received significant merit at all of his schools - so I don’t think it hurt him not to be at boys state. Although, I have heard/read that boy/girls state is one of those EFC’s that is looked upon positively. I think they are both worthwhile …and I would attend the one you WANT to go to in the place you want to visit.

I know there’s the option to drop your acceptance at UT Austin and enter the waitlist at one of your other choices… You might not get in again, but it’s the only way I can think of for you to do both.

Otherwise, since you’re really interested in business, I’d recommend doing EFL.

My S did EFL and Boys State 2 years ago. Both looked good on applications but he loved the other students he met at EFL (and still keeps in contact with some of them), he learned lessons about how to cope with ultra competitive situations at Boys State. He saw the benefits of both, enjoyed EFL more and probably learned more “life lessons” at Boys State. Some states do a much better job than others at hosting Boys / Girls State. And some colleges (not top) favor Boys / Girls State on admissions. If you know where you want to attend college you can ask the admissions rep. if not I would do whatever you want more… Highly competitive Poli-Sci types might do Girls State regardless.

Good for you in either case…
