I was recently accepted as a Winter transfer to the University of Michigan.

My intended major in Communication studies.

I would enter with 55 credits but they do not clear my distribution requirement a whole lot. Only the Social Science requirement is done. I have 4 for Humanities and 0 for Natural Science.

I spoke with a pre-concentration advisor and she told me I am, at minimum, 2 ½ years away from graduating, but likely 3 or 3 ½ years away from graduating from UofM.

That would total my debt to around $45k at graduation.

I have a full ride to Wayne State U. in Detroit and 64 credits.

I am at most two years away from double majoring in Finance and Accounting.

I would graduate in $ surplus.

Here's the catch: I plan to go for my MBA or JD at a top school a few years after graduating. Many tell me for that reason that I should do my best not to incur any debt in undergraduate studies.

Should I follow that and stick to my full ride or pony up the money and time to get the prestigious education?

I’d stay with the full ride. Also consider- in addition to tuition, your GPA, which should be great since you were accepted to UoM, will be reset to 0.00 to start anew at Michigan.

One thing you could do is to ask for your enrollment at U.M. to be deferred. Then use the time to take Humanities and Sciences at your current less-expensive college. When you finally start at U.M. you will have fulfilled the requirements you was talking about. This way you can save some money and still graduate with the U.M. degree.

@albo23 hey dude. How did you talk to a pre-concentration adviser? Also if you have 55 credits, how would it take you 3 1/2 years to graduate? I thought LSA is 120 credits. If you take 5 classes per semester and some summer school courses, I think you can make it out in 2.

@Matisyahu - Go to your departments website and there should be a link to setup an advising appt. But my advisers explanation was that many of my transferred credits do not fulfill the distribution requirement. Therefore I need to begin completing the distribution requirement as well as the concentration requirement classes.
