Glasses for auditions

Hello! So I got a callback for pace and I’m auditioning for UCLA both for musical theatre. I’m pretty near sighted and wear glasses everyday to school but when I’m in productions, I don’t wear them and I’m fine. I have a real fear of touching my eyes and my eyes are very very sensitive and I would really like to avoid having to get contacts. For the voice and acting component of the audition, not wearing glasses would be fine. However, for dance calls, I would need them to see the dance to learn it correctly. Do I have to just suck it up and get over my fear or can I wear my glasses for the dance calls only. Thank you!

Goodness, wear them! (but make sure they’ll stay on). But realize this may be a continuing issue for you. Its just the beginning of many dance calls. And I could be wrong, but I don’t think I see many dancers on broadway wearing glasses. You may have to find a pair of contacts that work for you. Contacts are not what they once were. Many are very comfortable and you can wear them continuously for 30 days.

^ What tramsmom said. And I would wear them for ALL the auditions so they have a memory of what you look like. Eventually, if you continue in this field, you’ll most likely have to overcome your fear of contacts, but I wouldn’t worry about that for auditions. Just wear the glasses.

I agree with Calliene that you should wear them for all the auditions - they may even make you more memorable, which is always a plus! As for future career: if you really hate contacts, maybe you could save up and get Lasik after you graduate?

Last year, in the throes of over-thinking the process, I told my son not to wear his glasses so his audition “face” would match his head shot. On the other hand, I remember a lovely young lady who wore glasses, and had a very distinctive look. The glasses were very distinctive too. She was adorable.

Never do something new/different at an audition. If you are comfortable in your glasses, wear them. If not, don’t. Be yourself. You can wear glasses in a headshot and not on stage or vice versa. Your personality and spirit are what matter. Absolutely do not go without vision correction if you need it (especially in dance) and if you are used to doing without (when acting/singing) then skip it. This is not the time to worry about whether you will someday feel comfortable with contacts or want to get surgery. This is about what helps you to feel at your best now.

Most adorable question I have ever read on here.

Absolutely wear your glasses. It won’t affect anything. Artistics just assume you know you can’t wear them for a production.

I would actually think it makes you stand out. I wish I saw more people in glasses at auditions, I find them endearing.

I think glasses are great! And I agree if you choose to wear them, wear them for all parts of your audition. You want to make sure they recognize and remember you. Changing your appearance by removing your glasses is not recommended between songs/monologues and dance calls. So if you are comfortable in your glasses, wear them!

wear them. both my boys wear glasses and they were fine during college auditions. However, if yours are loose, visit your local optician or lens crafters and get the arms tightened to your ears so they stay put during dance call. break a leg!

Thank you all so much for your responses! I have already taken my headshots without glasses and I really prefer singing and acting without them. Do you think it would be alright if I just wore them for the dance call? Would I be able to just let them know that I did that?

I think it is a fine idea to wear them for the dance call. BAL !!!
