Goin over the credit limit

Can any current or former McGill students tell me how easy or difficult it is to get permission to exceed the required credit amount? I will be entering McGill as U1 thanks to some APs, none of which, unfortunately, will be accepted by the History Department for credit. I plan to major in History (honors) and Minor in political science, which will take up 78 out of the 90 credits I need to graduate, not leaving very much room for electives.

So has anyone run into the problem where they did not have enough spare credits to take the electives they wanted? I believe I read somewhere that you need permission to exceed your credit amount (though I would be more than happy to be proven wrong on this point!), so how hard is it to get that permission?

Any information will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Exceeding credits for a degree is usually not a problem (e.g. consider those who change major often), the issue is exceeding the number of courses per semester (18 credits is the usual max, beyond that you’ll need to fill out forms and get them signed by the proper authorities; of course, if your grades aren’t good, they won’t authorize exceeding the limit).
