What's it like to go to college far away from where your parents are? Most students here obviously stay within about 3 hours for college, but there must be others out there that do the opposite coast thing. I live in Ohio, and I'm looking at Pomona College. Is that too much distance? Wouldn't that make it hard to come home very often? Are there people out there that actually do this?

Depends on what you want, obviously. I know some people from my school who are going to Hawaii (I live in Ohio also). Obviously, you won't be able to come home as much as you would if you went to OSU or another college in state, but if you don't mid that, you should go if you like the college.

There are many people who go far away for college. True, most stay closer to home, but I come from Florida, and I know many people who are going to New England, which is more than a day's drive away, as well as some heading to the midwest and even California.
Obviously, one cannot drive home on weekends--but the odds are, you'll find that you don't want to. Most people don't go home that often even if they're near home, unless they're going to a commuter-type school.
Depending on your financial situation, it may not be too difficult to come home for most of the bigger breaks--thanksgiving, winter, spring, summer, etc. It also depends on your family situation as to whether it's "too much distance" or not. I know many people who have no qualms about going far away for college, and many who wished to stay near home. That's a decision only you can make.
