I live on the east coast but I am interested in attending a college on the west coast. I have lived in the same general area my whole life and am intested in a change. My parents aren't really up for the hassle of traveling back and forth and would rather have me closer to home. Is anyone currently in college and traveling across the country to attend college? Is it really that much trouble to go back and forth every now and then?

The nearest college I am considering is nine hours away; the current furthest is 17 but it was 23 (didn't like the school). Here are some things to consider:

Driving- if you're used to driving at home, you're not going to be able to at school. Even if you drove your car out to the school, you wouldn't be able to bring it home and would be without a car on breaks. This is something I always ask about at schools; do underclassmen have cars? Do upperclassmen "need cars" or can one be okay without one for four years?

Family emergencies- If you are used to being with your family when they need you or vice-versa, it won't happen nearly as much. You'll probably be able to get home if there's a big crises, but not for everything

High school friends/ events- You'll probably be far from most of your HS friends and probably won't be able to go to your homecoming. Is that a big deal to you? Are their traditions at your school you want to be able to travel back for?

Family events- Will it bother you to miss things like siblings'/parents' birthdays?
