Anyone have any knowledge/experience on how viable it is for someone who lives in and attends a target school in NY to end up as an analyst in SF with no prior connections/contacts? At what stage of the process is it best to go for it - sophomore internships, junior internships, or is it just too uncommon that it would affect my chances of getting an offer at all? As to why I'd pick SF over NY, I have an interest in tech banking (unfortunately, don't have much of a CS background - still have time to develop that though), prefer the lifestyle and cost of living, and have ambitions of eventually making it into VC.

Yeah, just apply to those regional offices. If you’re from a target with a decent GPA you’ll get an interview. Email people at the regional offices to be safe too. “Hey, I don’t know if you guys recruit here, but I’m interested in working in finance and I’d like to work in a west coast office. Just wondering what kind of opportunities you guys have available. I’ve attached my resume. Would love a chance to talk. Thanks”

^^^ I would toss that resume in the delete pile in a sec.
Never and I repeat never address a future employer with Hey and “you guys”. Write complete sentences, not phrases. Be more respectful.

Definitely possible, I have friends who have gone to schools such as Stern/Ross/Georgetown and received summer analyst positions from top west coast banks (GS/MS/CS).

If you can qualify for top banks on the east coast then it’s not hard to network your way to the west coast
