On my commonapp I put that I was interested in bioengineering which would be at Watson at Binghamton, but now I'm considering just going into biology because I can't make up my mind if I want to do genetics or biomedical engineering. I've been reading and I guess Binghamton admits you based on a certain college? I have mostly read a lot of this about the business school but I'm not sure if it applies to the engineering school also.

In short could I have screwed up my chances of getting into Binghamton by putting down bioengineering instead of biology? I think I have about an average profile 1350 on sats out of 1600, 4.0, top ten of my class, active in theatre at my school, president of book club, NHS, and Drama club and am in some other clubs like student government but those are the biggies. I'm also internshipping with a heart surgeon at the hospital next door to my school which I think is pretty awesome but it doens't count because I got it after I applied so the school doesn't know about it.

Sorry for the tangent but I would just like to know if Binghamton would reject me from Watson when I could have gotten into Harpur, and if I get accepted could I possibly call them up and say I want to switch to Harpur? I feel very dumb for putting bioengineering down and changing my mind but I thought that was just an area of interest I thought I didn't have to declare my major until later on.

If I were you, I would contact the admissions office to see if you can have your application switched over before your decision comes in. I am sure that many high school seniors do not know exactly what they want to do. Your experience with the heart surgeon has given you a new or broader perspective. That is a good thing. Sharing that with the admissions office might be a good idea. That is just one opinion though…

we have had a similiar conversation with the Binghamton admissions office. Yes they do admit by college based on what you put on the application. The engineering department is notoriously difficult to get into. Ideally, you apply to your first choice college - believe me I understand that that SOUNDS simple. IF you are rejected from the engineering school you CAN CALL and ask to be considered for arts & Science. This is not an automatic thing. The best recommendation we had was to contact your assigned admissions person NOW (ours was REALLY helpful) and let him/her know the entire situation up front. Good luck

I would immediately call them letting them know of your concerns, as well as what the correct course of action would be. As you have stated, your application is currently to the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science, when it should be for the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences.

I know that to switch from one major to the other within the same school (i.e., Watson), Admissions can easily change it. I am unsure of the procedure for switching schools entirely – but I can say that waiting for a decision before changing is inadvisable, as the Admissions Committee typically does not reconsider applicants for multiple schools.
