going insane.... am i crazy

i applied for transfer to ND and got in......

im currently premed at cornell. and im planning on sticking w/ premed and possibly going into an MD/MBA program...

im not really happy at cornell, i hate greek life, etc, and think id be happier at nd. and i know everyone says "go where you'll be happiest." but, being caught up in todays society, and w/ the emphasis that people place on graduating with an ivy league degree, i can't help but wonder if i'm seriously going to regret it if i leave cornell and graduate from ND. not that ND isnt an amazing school also, obviously, but i just dont know..

thoughts, please? i'm losing sleep at night...

OK, so I wasn't in exactly the same situation, but I had to make a similar decision. I applied to ND EA as kind of a safety school and got in. I was later accepted to Dartmouth, Amherst, and some other schools in the RD round. Eventually, the decision came down to Dartmouth vs. Notre Dame. If you do a search on that, you will find countless posts in which I compared every aspect of each school. Like you, I was losing sleep at night and losing interest in anything and everything except for fretting over my pro/con lists and checking my "ND vs. Dartmouth" on CC every five minutes. I was a wreck :). My friends all said the decision was obvious- I should choose Dartmouth, and my family all said it was equally obvious- in favor of Notre Dame. I couldn't get it out of my head that Dartmouth was an Ivy League school. But after I visited, I felt I just didn't click with the campus, and was a bit shocked at the degree to which Greek life permeated the campus culture. So, I ended up deciding on Notre Dame and that's where I'll be headed in the fall. I don't know if I'll be happier at ND than I would have been at Dartmouth, but I guess I'll find out how it goes. You already know you aren't totally happy at Cornell and so the advice I would give to you is the same cliched advice you've been getting everywhere else- go where you'll be happiest. To be very honest, I don't think there is a huge difference between a Cornell degree and a Notre Dame degree, especially if you areplanning on medical school afterward. Anyway, I'll end my rambling here, but feel free to PM me if you need someone to commisserate with you. :)

The difference in prestige between Cornell and Notre Dame is so minimal that I think it won't make a difference in the long run. Have you ever asked some random person to name the Ivy League schools? They get Harvard, Yale and maybe Princeton and that is where it ends.

I am a transfer to Notre Dame too, so I know some of the thought processes that go into it (though I am obviously not in your situation). Let me just say that there is a reason you applied to transfer, and a reason you are on this board (either to be talked into or out of it).

Look at what you are saying...you are not happy at Cornell, and look at the reason! We don't have greek life at ND, and I like it a lot better (I also come from a big greek school). I believe you absolutely should go where you will be happiest because you will be more productive and it will be beneficial in the long run!

I have friends who transferred to Notre Dame from Princeton and Stanford because they were not happy and as far as I can tell neither have regretted their decision. However, it is a value play, you have to find what is more important to you because you don't want to live with regrets! Cornell is ranked 5 spots higher than ND on US News' ranking (which isn't a great measure but it is all I have) and honestly I don't think that you are going to lose a lot of prestige by transferring. People know and respect Notre Dame just like Cornell most everywhere; I think they respect it more here in Denver honestly.

Anyways, I am talking from my prospective too much so here is what you need to do. Think about moving to Notre Dame knowing that it is five spots lower than Cornell on US News and also think about staying at Cornell. Which makes your stomach turn more? Which is the one YOU want to do regardless of what other people say? Once you know that, I think you have your decision. Good luck and feel free to get in touch. I won't be able to be on here much in the next 24 hours but will be back after that.

Did you apply anywhere else for transfer? If not, there must be something about ND that intrigues you. It may be more than not liking Cornell.

THANK YOU for all your input..

thanks to it, i am ATTENDING notre dame next yr

SOOOOOOO EXCITED

Yay! I hope you're happy with the change. Good luck to you.

I did apply to another school (BC) but ND was my dream school so turning down BC was an easy decision for me even though I did like Creighton overall.

I may be wrong on this but your question sounds like you are trying to talk yourself out of ND. If that is the case, think about why, as it could mean a couple different things. Is something holding you back, are you afraid of prestige, or perhaps ND isn't the right place for you?

It is hard because you are right, I am not going to match up to your situation and even Shellzie's situation was different though it was closer to yours than mine. At the end, this is your decision and it has to be one you are content with, you know? Just think about the feelings you are having and why you are having them and hopefully that will lead you. I just have a feeling, from what you have said, that you are leaning towards staying at Cornell and that is cool if that is what is best for you. Just take the time and try to be honest with yourself with what is best for you, and once you know make a decision and be done with it! That is the best advice I can give and I hope it helps some.

I wish I could just tell you what was right for you but it has to come from you. No matter the decision, just make sure that after you make it you feel at ease as that should help you know it is right. Good luck!

heyy guys. i chose notre dame over johns hopkins and it was seriously the toughest decison of my life. but not a day goes by, not a minute goes by, that my love for notre dame grows stronger. johns hopkins is a good school too, but i chose notre dame because i knew i'd be happier there. see you guys in august!!
