Going into my senior year and I have no idea what colleges to look into

So I want to be a lawyer in the future but I am not quite sure what schools to go to ungrad for. Probably majoring in either psychology, business, or engineering. I was just wondering what you guys would reccommend im terms of colleges given my information.

Personal Info:
-From Connecticut
-Parents are divorced; I dont talk to my dad anymore, but my mom makes around $40k/year

Academic:
-3.7 UW GPA/ 4.2 W

  • 27 ACT
  • 1920 SAT
  • By the end of my senior year I would have taken 12 AP classes ( 2 sophomore year, 4 junior year, 6 senior year )
  • Got a 3 on the APUSH exam, and 4 on my Psychology. Waiting on junior year results

EC:
-Captain of the wrestling team, 4 year varsity member

  • president of the spanish national honor society
  • Work around 35-40 hours a week to help support my mom

If someone could point me in the direction of some good colleges thatd be swell, I am kind of lost at this point. Thanks!

Use the search function on this site under the “Find A College” heading. You can enter your stats, areas of interest, big school - or smaller school etc. Good Luck!

What are your geographic & size preferences?

With divorced parents, financial aid could be a problem at colleges that require the non-custodial parent information to determine financial aid. To check on this, go to the college’s financial aid pages and check how to apply for financial aid.

When running net price calculators, if the school needs only information from the parent you live with, use only that parent’s household finances. Otherwise, include the household finances of both parents, but be aware that net price calculators have a reputation of being less accurate in these situations. If the non-custodial parent will be uncooperative with financial aid forms, you will not get financial aid from a school that requires his information.

You probably need a full ride (or at least full tuition if you are eligible for full Pell grant, leaving an amount that may be stretchable with federal direct loan and some work earnings) from either need-based financial aid or merit scholarships.

Here are some lists of large merit scholarships:

Looks like you could get the full ride at Prairie View A&M: http://www.pvamu.edu/faid/home/types-of-aid/scholarships/university-scholarships/ . It does have various engineering majors.

Any college really!

  1. You need to find out how much your parents (if Dad will pay?) can pay for college and get a dollar amount. Affordability will probably be your limiting factor in finding schools.
  2. Look to your in-state schools first and see which schools will have the majors you are interested in pursuing.
  3. Check with your HS counselor where students with similar stats have gotten acceptances.
  4. Figure out if you want to stay close to home or go far away.
  5. Are there any local schools you could visit to get an idea of size/location etc... ?
