Going over 10gb/month for free

How exactly does Cornell track how much bandwidth you've used per month? Does it assign each computer a static MAC address or something?

If you go over the limit, can't you just go to one of the public wifi spots with your laptop and use that connection for free?

RedRover counts against the quota. I suppose there’s RedRover Guest… but I don’t really know how that would work.

And yeah, they track by MAC address.

The secret around the bandwidth limit is to rent out laptops from the library. Doing stuff on those laptops like downloading or watching youtube videos did not count against my quota.

or… just go to one of the many public computer labs and use it there. theres always people doing that in the RPCC lab lol hahah

yeah people download dramas or even torrent on public labs…

i dont know how to torrent in public labs though…if you know anbuitachi plz PM me.

Run utorrent off a flash drive in a library or a dorm’s computer room. I did it all last semester in becker and was seeing d/l speeds as high as 10mb/s through a private tracker.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned DC++ yet…

^DC is garbage compared to bit torrent. Get what you can off it, but there was plenty of stuff I like to watch that I had to torrent (particulary shows like big love, rescue me, sons of anarchy, etc…). DC is good at getting crap shows like 24, heroes, and lost up quick, and I guess for music (I didn’t really d/l any), but for a lot of stuff the selection is rather poor.

exactly…i always have to torrent or rip **** to put on dc++

is the 10gb limit download only, or upload too?

Hows the anime selection on the cornell DC++ network. That’s the only thing I would really be downloading that would come close to the 10gb limit. Just a single series of 25 episodes, good quality, can usually run 8gb or more. :/

DC++ has a lot of the newer anime series, not so much teh older ones so if you are into those the collection isn’t too bad. though some might have graduated this year, not sure. have to check when school starts.

@hermanns

you torrented off a flashdrive and you didn’t get firewalled? i ran bitorrent on public lab computer and cause of the firewalls and stuff only get speeds of like 2kb/s hahah

DC++ has its benefits and downsides. It’s generally a lot faster than torrenting and has stuff that’s really difficult to find sometimes (textbooks, etc). On the other hand, the selection is overall more limited, it can be harder to search, and if your host signs off you lose the whole connection.

AnbuItachi, no never had trouble with firewall. I only ever torrented in the becker computer room and catherwood lib in ives though.

jwright, in my experience torrenting at cornell with a very, very good private tracker is that it is usually faster than DC++, but compared to public trackers, yes dc is faster.

oh i only tried in RPCC lab, didn’t work =(

can someone answer my question? is the 10gb limit download only or download and upload? reason i’m asking is that i’m a member on a private torrent site that requires me to upload quite constantly

both counts
