Hey guys,

I was wondering is it possible to attend and different university without transferring....i.e. I attend University A and was previously admitted to University B without going to request my transcripts from University A and sending them to University B and just apply to University B. I know I will be accepted to University B if I just apply as a first semester freshmen. Is this illegal, am I infringing on any laws by not letting University A know I am going to attend another college?

Why do I want to do this?--University A's Financial aid screwed me my second semester of my freshman year so I was unable to afford University A after my first semester. I cant get my transcripts -- even though the grades are really good, but I intend to pay what I owe to get my transcripts after I complete a year at University B

Also I checked with University B and they would allow my to attend if I have "not" attended any previous University without even needing to re-apply--is there any law against what I am doing

Please help-- I just want to finish school and get a decent job

You must send transcripts from all other colleges you have attended whenever you apply somewhere.

Is it illegal not to do so? I doubt it; even if a college wanted to press the matter, a judge would be very unlikely to rule in their favor. But if university B ever finds out that you failed to inform them that you attended university A, you will not be attending B. Even if you’re already accepted, and even if you’re already there.

Most colleges want your transcripts from ALL of the colleges you attended. If the info crops up later, it can but a wrench in your works. I’ve seen posts here on CC where it has really caused some problems. Particularly in competitive programs, it seems.

If you are applying for financial aid, it is particularly likely to come to light that you were at another school. that info is tracked by FAFSA. I don’t know under what circumstances it would be revealed or if it is automatically made available to your new schools fin aid office, but believe me, it is tracked. Especially if you have had some suspensions or issues with it.

I have not had any negative situations that should raise a flag… I had great grades-- Its just I want out of Univeristy A and transferring will make me miss the deadline for next semester at Univeristy B…can I send transcripts after I enroll?

-would you advise telling University B that I attended University A

I don’t understand how transferring would make you miss the deadline. If you are just taking courses without applying to a program, that is fine. I, and many others, including my kids have taken courses at our local college without applying there, and so we don’t have to send info to them regarding prior colleges. However, if any of them wanted to enter a degree program there, they would have to fill out an application form instead of just a course registration form, and yes, all colleges attended have to be listed on it.

So if you are applying for a degree program and financial aid, you will have questions as to prior college courses, and as with any questions such forms, you should answer them honestly. For a non degree program that does not ask for such info, you don’t need to supply the info.

You need to sort out your financial issues with A asap so you can get your transcripts released. You also must inform B that you attended A. What you’re saying doesn’t make sense - most schools still have room for transfers, not for freshmen. But lying on your application to B cannot bring good things in your future…just don’t do it!

Most college apps ask you right out if you’ve had other college courses. You don’t want to lie on your application. I still don’t understand if you have no negative issues why you can’t let college B know that you were at college A. If you need financial aid at College B, FAFSA does know that you went to CollegeA and will present your aid accordingly. If there are any financial issues involving your aid at College A, it will likely come up.

Most colleges applications ask point blank “did you attend any college previously or earn credits at another college”…something like that. You really need to HONESTLY answer all questions on your application. So…do I advise you to tell College B you attended College A? I don’t think you have a choice.

You really MUST sort out your issues with College A. You will not likely be able to get financial aid from College B until you do.
