Going to a football game alone?

I wanna go to the Cal-UCLA game and USAC is providing buses and all up there. I have friends at Cal and I'm also buying tickets for my cousins who are UCLA alums living in the Bay Area. The problem is, I'm probably going to be riding in the bus by myself :( None of my friends want to go to the game because they're not into football and because they're making a big deal of the cost. Anyways, I've never taken a rooter bus before by myself. Do people generally make friends and talk with each other on the bus or do they all just talk with their friends and turn away from strangers?

I haven’t taken that bus, but I know you will make friends on the bus and have a great time. I’m pretty sure that some of the kids on the bus will be part of the UCLA Rally Committee, and they are very social and very welcoming.

If we weren’t flying up, we’d be happy to take you up, but I’m sure you’d rather go with rabid students than rabid alumni!

If you can go, try getting into the spirit the morning of the game by heading over to Berkeley’s Greek Theatre, where the UCLA Bay Area Alumni are hosting a big tailgate party, with Joe & Josephine Bruin and the UCLA marching band. It starts at 9 a.m., and there will be food, beer, etc. A great way to start the pre-game!!! The Greek Theatre is practically next to Memorial Stadium.

you can save $15 if you buy the ticket to the picnic today; it is $30 at the door but only $15 if you buy it before Oct. 6th.
That’s nice to know UCLA77  Rabid alumni, lol.

Do any students attend the alumni party or is it primarily for the “elderly” alums? No offense, but I’m not sure if I really want to hang around with a bunch of guys 20 or 30 years my senior. Good to know though. I’d probably think about attending if I didn’t have friends that were students at Cal.

$15 and all the beer you can drink? Sure, some college students attend! It’s primarily older alums, to be sure, just because there’s more of them around and a lot of current students go to outside tailgates with their friends. But the entire band will be there, because that’s their lunch/brunch before the game.

Weather up here is GREAT!!! Okay, not as warm as LA, but still … Just finished dinner in the Marina area of SF – so cool Melrose/Old Pasadena vibe on Chestnut. Now need to get up early to make it across the Bay Bridge for the UCLA meet up at the Greek. We were on the same plane as a bunch of the UCLA yell team. Tailgate and football. Can’t wait!

Well. That was . . . brutal.

On the other hand, the weather was perfect, the Bruin tailgate at the Greek amazing, lots of great food, drink, and the UCLA band the BEST!!! Loved the new Muse songs at halftime.

Now the team just needs to find a quarter back who can, uh, play. Maybe it would have been different with Brehaut. One can hope.

the old UCLA showed up today…

I agree about the quarter back situation…throwing under 100 yards a game is not going to get it done. I think we are slightly better with Brehaut (Prince is still not 100%?). The thing is, UCLA has been lacking a quarter back for at least the last five years; not sure why we haven’t found a good rookie yet

Game was disappointing. Let’s not talk about it.

Berkeley was amazing! I ended up talking with people on the bus as I was not the only one traveling solo so that was nice. We left at 1:30 AM and arrived at 7:30 AM, approximately. It was really cold in the morning, but overall gorgeous weather. It wasn’t too hot and it was a perfectly clear day.

I was most shocked at the game day atmosphere. I never knew Cal had so much football parties going around all over the city. The campus was set up with booths and canopies and various tailgaters. The best sight was the frat row where houses lit it up with loud music and parties outside their front lawns. Amazing sight. Something that is literally nonexistent at UCLA (probably because we don’t have an on campus stadium). As a Bruin, I am very envious of what they have up there. It really is something special to bring on gameday. The lack of atmosphere at UCLA on Saturday really makes the football team irrelevant to the school.

The college town was great. It’s kinda like Westwood, except much bigger and more ghetto. Nevertheless, there were great food options. I ate at La Burrita and at the Asian Ghetto. I didn’t know Berkeley was deprived of chain restaurants. That’s a good thing I guess.

And of course, I got heckled a LOT by Cal fans :stuck_out_tongue: It was all good and fun though. I took a picture with Oski the Bear, who very much refused to take a picture with me in good humor, though of course he did in the end. And as I walked pass the band, a good amount of the band members were yelling at me “Eat my shorts!” hahahahaha
