Going to CalSO from OAK

Just to make sure, I will only have to take the Richmond train from Oakland Airport station to Downtown Berkeley station right? No need to get off midway to make a transfer?

Correct.

I have one more question :). If I plan to take the bus from the Downtown Berkeley BART station to Unit 3, I would have to go south on Shattuck and take the 51B. Correct? How often does this bus arrive and how much does the bus ride cost? Thanks! I am getting more and more nervous as the day approaches.

Correct. Once you get out of the BART station (assuming you take the long escalator up) turn left and keep walking until you reach the intersection. That’s where the bus stop is. You ought to be able to take either the 51B or the 49 to get to Unit 3. Although, with all the bus line changes they’ve been making lately, it may only be the 51B you can take.

Few bits of advice:

1.) While it is possible to walk from the airport to the BART station, it is a 1.25mi walk thru a very dangerous part of town. Not to mention, there is a river crossing and a freeway overpass. If you’re new and don’t blend in, there is a good chance you will get shot, even in bright daylight. That said, there is a walking path that’s separate from the car routes that takes you to Doolitle Dr and into Oakland from the entrance of the terminals.

2.) You can take either the AirBART or AC Transit 73 to the BART station. AirBART is $3, is a direct route, runs every 15min, and has room for luggage. AC Transit 73 is $2, runs once every 30min, and is a regular bus. The BART station is approximately four bus stops from the airport, if I recall correctly. WARNING: have exact change – buses do not carry change!

3.) At the BART station, you will want to take the Richmond train northbound to Berkeley. The trains run on the right-hand tracks, so you want to go towards the tracks that are closer to the “inside” of the station compared to where the bus stops. During commute hours, the trains run once every 5min. You will need to purchase a blue ticket from the vending machine, and the cost is $2.95, IIRC – it should be on the website. Insert the ticket at the faregate to enter, and keep the ticket – you will need it again when you exit.

3.) Once on the train, Downtown Berkeley will be 7 stations away from Oakland Coliseum / Airport. In order, the stations are: Fruitvale, Lake Merrit, 12th Street, 19th Street, MacArthur, Ashby, Downtown Berkeley. If you see San Leandro or Bay Fair, you have gone the wrong direction. Same if you see Rockridge (that means you took the Pittsburg / Bay Point train instead of the Richmond, so you will have to go back to MacArthur and take the right train – do not exit the station).

4.) Once at Berkeley, insert your ticket into the faregates again to exit. You will be on Shattuck Ave, two blocks west of campus.

5.) You should plan approximately an hour for the entire trip. This is because you will be spending several minutes waiting for buses / trains. It will also be a 15min walk from BART to the relevant parts of campus.

Hopefully, you’ll meet some other fellow CalSO’ers on BART who you can work together to figure it out. A large part of college is about collaboration, and it’s not too early to make new friends. Good luck!
