Going to JHU for undergrad will decrease postgrad chances?

Will going to JHU decrease my chances of getting into its fantastic med school? I heard that there are only a certain amount of undergrads from their own school that they accept, they want diversity after all!

If you research the undergraduate schools attended by students at Hopkins Medical School–you will see that the most frequently attended undergraduate institution is The Johns Hopkins University—by a lot. Harvard is #2.

Attending Hopkins as an undergraduate does not decrease your chances, nor increase your chances when applying to the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine … one of the most selective medical schools in the country. As bonanza stated, often the most frequently undergraduate school for enrolling Hopkins Med students is Hopkins, but that is because our undergraduates do quite well when applying to medical school in general.

Yep. To put things into perspective, Hopkins had 352 applicants last year. Of these, 223 (63%) were accepted to at least 1 medical school. Of those 223 admits, a little over 60 enrolled at Hopkins.

In other words, between 25% and 30% of successful Hopkins pre-meds end up at Hopkins Med. Don’t worry.

60 enrolled? out of a class of 120 at hopkins med, half were hopkins ugrad students? no way, it’s probably around 10-15- so 10%. if anyone cares, 10 matriculated at penn last year as well. penn came to hopkins a few weeks ago to talk about their love of hopkins students and why they accept so many of us. they had a list of hopkins matriculants at penn over the last few years. i guess there are no hard feeling for stealing their provost. there are loads of our grads over there but idk about schools like harvard, duke washu, etc.

ok so i guess my point is that i dont think going to hopkins will hurt your chances for any school, and it will probably help (if you are a great candidate in the first place) at some schools.

Yes, I looked that up again after thinking that it didn’t seem quite right. Hopkins Med has a total of ~60 Hopkins undergrads, which means that

~7% of Hopkins students end up at Hopkins med
~13% of Hopkins med students were Hopkins undergrads

This is almost exactly in line with MIT, where 7.6% of successful pre-meds end up at Hopkins.

Hopkins will never close doors for you.

Gosh, whether you get into Hopkins med is a function less of whether you were a Hopkins undergrad or if you were from another school and thus promise diversity. It’s about how well you do in your undergraduate pursuits regardless of where you do them.
