Going to Solin

Well there's four decent Dell's on the third floor, plus wireless in most study rooms on each floor so it's a pretty good deal, but evveryone I knew got the internet in their room. The Solin lab is no substitute, especially when you work for hours on your webwork every week.

Is the common area open 24/7?

yea pretty much, though I dont know anyone that hung out there past 1am

im still confused as to how you found out where you will be living.

I called the residence office and they told me that the lottery doesnt take place until the 16th.

hey, i put solin down as my first choice! i dont see how you guys found out about your housing status so early, but if its your 15th choice i guess i can take that to mean i'm pretty firmly in solin. i really love the look of the place. i like the independent living, im not the best cook but i'd rather learn than be eating the same rez food everyday. and think of it this way: 15mins walking in -30 or 15mins on a heated metro? plus i've heard that solin has a lot of international students and is a bit more laid back. that's exciting if there's lots of veggies and lgbt students too.

what i was wondering though does anybody have an idea of how far solin is from like the main nightlife and student hangouts? i heard that the metro stops at like 1am or something?

I also put solin down as my fist choise mostly because I hope to aviod what I imagine is a typical college dorm atmosphere. And being vegitarian I prefer to cook for myself as well. Besides that it seems you get more of an opporotunity to be involved in the actuall city rather than just the university. I like riding subways too. Basically everything about it is apealing to me.
Plus it gets bonus coolness points for having been a chocolate factory.
I think enough people absolutly hate the idea of living in solin that if you put it number one in your list you'll almost be garanteed a room there. Everything should go absolutly swimmingly.

You all sound very pleasent by the way.

Oh, and to whoever was wondering I don't think anyone realy got their housing assingments yet. Since this thread was started last year.

yeh pretty much...solin is the by far the most unwanted residence...at my time at solin (a month)...i met only one person who actaully wanted to be there...the rest of the people were put there because of their bad lottery numbers..

honestly...i advise u people to try not to be different and get into upper rez or new rez...or greenbrier, its exactly like solin but its on campus...u get the solin experience on campus...

solin is a real s*** hole....some people who end up there were cool...but overall i prefer upper rez...

ur so far away from campus that u feel isolated and no connection to mcgill.....if u want that...then go ahead and pick solin..

hahah good call about the fact that it was posted last year.

btw, according to the housing office - lottery is on the 16th and it will be posted on Minerva next week

Hey I heard it's possible to switch after right? It's too soon to talk about switching but I really want Greenbriar. If anyone absolutely hates Greenbriar and would trade it for anything PM me pls!

its gonna be almost impossible to switch if u get a proper room...there will a lots of people in solin who will be in living rooms...because mcgill always accepts more people than they have space for...so first these "temps" move out of solin..then everyone else...

i was a temp and it took them 1 month to find me a space...the people who actaully have a room...well..i say like 2-3 monthes to switch out...by that time u will have all ur friends in solin that u wouldnt want to move anyway

how can you tell what number you are?

I think you find out what your number was after the fact. I wouldn't worry about it too much since it's not like you could do anything about if you knew you got a really high number in advance.

hey well i just found out i got into solin...n it was my first choice...very excited :D:D

Double Rez

how'd you guys find out? Email? Minerva?

Call, (514) 398-6368

Frick I Got Solin Hall Single

I Can't Afford It

AHHH SO IM NOT THE ONLY ONE.
here i am on holiday, and i get this email from mcgill res.. and lo and behold one of my LAST choices, solin hall, is my residence. i CANNOT live there. i dont think id ever eat or go to class. aka ill die. might as well kill me now.

**** i hate mcgill already :( :( :(

solin was pretty far down my list as well but i got it.
but u know.. it's probably not gonna be as bad as u all think.
the place is what we all make of it.

actually if u stuck with solin its no big deal....altho its probably better if u werent

i was in solin for the first month...didnt like the place too much...but nonetheless solin has its advantages and it really grows on u..almost all my friends there loved it in end..

u get 2 or 3 other suitemates depending on ur room...and u become really really close to them...which is really cool...u dont really get that in upper rez...altho u might get pretty tight with ur neighbours

solin has a very very tight community which is really nice...and u learn to live on ur own...in yr 2 u will be ahead of everyone..

try to get the solin annex rooms 101, 201 or 301...these rooms are HUGE its like living in a mansion u get so much space and u live with 3 other people...so much fun...

u also dont need to put up with the hill...tat kills u...and u have much cheaper restaurants and supermarkets around the solin area...
