Going to Solin

i was "temporarily assigned" to solin hall... any idea what this means/why it happened?

im in the same boat as CanadianEh. does anyone knw when ill get to move to my actual room, or wher tht room will be?

yeh i was a "temp" last year

this means u dont get a proper room and u will be sleeping the living room of one of the appartments in solin....gonna suck real bad...

they will give u a proper room about after a month or so depending on ur lottery number...

tip...the more u annoy the residence woman (her name is kerry) the faster she will get u a proper room...and u can try to move into upper rez or new rez...tats the good thing

i got gardner in the end...was very very happy...

I got the solin single I wanted.

Someone said: "try to get the solin annex rooms 101, 201 or 301...these rooms are HUGE its like living in a mansion u get so much space and u live with 3 other people...so much fun..."

How do you go about getting a particular room like that? Could it possibly be as simple as calling up the rez office and asking?

solin was my first choice and I got in!

I'm so excited for everything!

hey guys
for those of you who were temps last year maybe you would have some idea about this;
my boyfriend is a temp at solin at the moment but hes the first person on the waiting list, so they told him he should be in a permanent home by mid-july...will they take into account his choices of residences, or is there one rez he's more likely to get into than another?
I'm in gardner so it would be sweet if he were in upper rez or douglas.
Thanks guys, just wondering.

I have a question about room/hall change. They said it's based on a first come first serve basis after September 15. Is it possible to arrange your own room/hall change and inform them later on?

If that is possible....is there anyone out there who would rather have a Solin single (female) instead of a Greenbriar double?

well as i said i was temp for a month at solin...i pretty much know the residence system inside out...tried everyting to get a proper room

amc999...if ur bf is the first on the list...tats good news...but he will not get any of his choices...they will basically put him in the first empty room they can find (for example if someone cancels or drops out)..this can be in any rez (other than rvc)

mw610...no u cant arrange ur own transfer...and dont even bother going on sept 15, they will take atleast 2 monthes to find all the temps a proper room....if i were u i would be very happy with a greenbrier double...those are one of the best (u actually get ur privacy, its sort of like a single)...i had several friends in gb, its so close to campus and they have a tight community there too.... probably one of the best choices, its cheap too..(500$ a month)

dkm I actually got Solin single but I want greenbriar double cuz it's cheaper and closer.

And dkm, thanks for answering so many of my queries! (I just noticed how you've been answering most of them)

Hope to see you in Mcgill =)

oh my bad...

i sirously doubt anyone would trade with u anyway...hahaha...

greenbrier is like the most demanded residence

sigh...=(

thanks again tho

dmk008: so we shouldn't even bother trying to switch? i'm not in solin, i got rvc, and i really wanted an upper rez...

If you don't like your placement, try it out and see how it is, but submit your switching application early anyways, if you end up loving your placement just say you don't want to switch anymore when they call you.

If I fail to get a room/hall transfer can I opt out after first term? Do I have to go throught the sublet process?

If you're having financial problems, apply for student aid through McGill. Also, all of the residences at McGill with the exception of Greenbriar and Solin, with Solin being slightly more expensive then it's actually worth, are HORRIBLY overpriced. People with financial problems should not be living on rez, that's the hard truth about it. Class division in university is an unfortunate factor of life you'll be dealing with. You'll see kids driving their Mercedes Benz from New Rez to McGill every morning and kids who practically sleep in the library because they can't afford an internet connection in their crappy 1.5 apartment located on the far reaches of the blue line. If you have to opt out because of financial difficulties, I suggest you check out living off campus first. Unlike other big cities in North America, Montreal rents are very reasonable.

Thanks ICrisis

I'm looking into moving off campus already but I already paid $1000 deposit (stupid I KNOW) so I'm kinda stuck with living in rez for the first/second term, depending on how the whole residence thing works.

i got solin and it was my absolute last choice i dont want to be going there AT ALL! what can i do to change it??!!

I'm sorry for that first of all. There are basically three options for someone in your situation from what I've gathered. Number one: you can wait to get transferred which might take several months. Number two: you can look for off campus housing. And finnally you can figure out a way to just deal with it which might not be as bad as it seems.

Is there anyone who wants to live in Solin and would want to switch with me? I got assigned Solin and would like ANY of the downtown residences
