bob, you're being ridiculous. RSI is offered to, say, 40 students from the nation (some people come internationally). Being on a national team for an IO is one of four students in the nation. Winning a gold medal is just plain ridiculous.

RSI applicants are often more well rounded than gold medalists in specific competitions

pretty good, but I think going to RSI would be better

Better for admission? Probably not. Thousands of students take qualifying exams for International Olympiads and it all boils down to 4 or 5 people. RSI accepts 50 domestic and 25 international students.

Not exactly sure what you mean here. Honestly, well-rounded applicants don't necessarily have an advantage over lop-sided applicants.

To be fair Kenan, you won your medal as a senior. It would've actually helped if you won one as a junior. Granted, I still know a person rejected from Harvard with an IPhO gold (you probably know him - Lin?), but that's only because he doesn't particularly have any depth in his ECs.

jenkster: yes, and thanks!

big brother: woah, lin didn't get in?! but yeah, it's kind of an apples-to-oranges comparison to use myself as empirical evidence. my bad.

as for RSI people being more well rounded: huh? when you apply to rsi, you have to specify what field(s) you're interested in, and once you get there, you have to choose one narrow slice of one that field when you actually formulate your project. RSI is amazing, but not because it shows that you're a latter day renaissance man.

also, it's kind of stupid to try and hierarchize the relative legitimacy of the olympiads/rsi/westinghouse/other big contests. (unless you're hating on the bio olympiad. then we can all have a big laugh.) (note: i am kidding.)

That is perfectly acceptable. In Lin's fobby voice: "Biology is for noobs!"

Is the OP a troll?

haha, i rescind my disclaimer. I AM DEAD SERIOUS.

dang, i have discovered that it is fun spamming up the admissions forum now that i'm actually in college. man, these were the days, when i was all serious and nervous and stuff: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=208164

nostalgia

_< Biology is not for noobs! That would make me a noob! T.T

I am a perfectly legit member of the human race.

Sorry, just had to get that in.

If you memorize Campell you'll make USABO. Haha one of my friends at USABO camp didnt study or anything--- he just read the book for fun and made it through all the rounds lawl.

n00b n00b n00b

@truazn8948532: That's actually kind of true. USABO doesn't need as much preparation as the other olympiads. It's more memory oriented. When was your friend at camp? This year?

@iostream: oh my, I am hurt ._."

iostream, everyone who responded to your chance thread was sure that you would get into harvard. but you got rejected. That just shows how little high school students know about college admissions. congrats on your acceptance to MIT!

studying for USABO is like death...the Campbell book is so boring I can hardly get through it...and bio is my favorite subject :-/

Really? I like Campbell!

staring, confused at these American olympiads..

Well, all the American Olympiads' purpose is to find four representatives for the USA team on international Olympiads. So, your country (I'm assuming you're an international) should have them too.

o wow. gold medal at ICho is amazing

LOL @ ANY school not knowing what IChO is.

That's hilarious.

On the subject of RSI, it's actually somewhat common for students to give up international olympiads to do RSI, especially if they've already done that olympiad before. That's why Tiankai Liu and Gabriel Carroll have three IMO golds instead of four.
