I letter for my daughter (sophomore at UCLA) arrived today from the Golden Key International Honor Society. We have gotten things types of letters before and it is hard to know which ones are legitimate, selective and worth the membership fee. I plan to forward the letter to my daughter but would appreciate any insight. Thanks.

I got one too.

Any “society” trying to “honor” someone by forcing them to pay a membership fee is completely ridiculous.

Phi beta kappa is the only one that matters

The rest are like clubs in high school. They don’t really amount to anything unless you actively participate, then at the most you score some scholarships.

why would phi beta kappa be the only one that matters?

Should I join Golden Key?

PBK has to highest minimum GPA requirement. The rest are usually subject to just a 3.0 to 3.5 GPA

Join GK if you want to plan to actively participate. It’s not going to propel your resume out of this world, but you can try to score some scholarships.

Like hewhothrows said, only join these honor societies if you plan in participating in their activities. If you have the time, you should go to their meetings, run for positions. In Golden Key, you can get to know people from all majors.

Although I put Golden Key on my resume, I’ve never been asked about it. It is one of the more “prestigious” honor societies, as opposed to something like Mortar Board or Alpha Lambda Delta/Phi Eta Sigma.
