Does anybody know if LSU will still offer the Golden Oaks Scholarship (tuition waiver) for the 2010-2011 year to incoming freshmen? I've heard they've made some serious budget cuts, which could severely affect the criteria of the scholarship, or the scholarship itself.

If you mean for the freshman coming in for fall 2010, the awards have already been awarded and can’t be recinded.

As far as for the freshman class entering 2011, the awards criteria are currently being looked at, so there’s no word on what the requirements will be.

That being said, I wouldn’t worry too much. The reason they can put so much money is that in-state students already get in-state tuition for relatively lower test scores and grades (Think a 21 ACT and a 2.5 gpa are the requirements.) Thus I think they would have more money for scholarships, especially since LSU is trying to become a better known school, and having out standing OOS students is important.

^ Thanks, that was the answer I was looking for.

I called to find out for the 2011 scholarships… and after waiting roughly an hour, someone answered. She said that they are revamping all scholarships. I asked, “one thing for sure, there won’t be a Golden Oaks Scholarship, right?” And she answered, “no,” meaning that they won’t be offering it for fall 2011.

That, however, doesn’t mean they won’t be offering anything. The chair of engineering said they might offer it, but with a 10k scholarship instead. And if your state doesn’t offer petE, they may be able to pay for you to get in-state tuition (she gave examples like Mississippi). So I wouldn’t be too worried.

Wow that stinks. That was a huge factor in raising LSU’s academic standards I believe.

^ Yeah, a 10k scholarship instead of Golden Oaks is basically just paying in-state tuition. They haven’t decided what they are going to do about it, but it looks like there won’t be a Golden Oaks scholarship anymore (maybe just Tigers, but with Golden Oaks requirements). I really hope my state will pay for the out-of-state tuition for petE. If not, I’ll cry myself to sleep. Either way, LSU is still VERY generous with the aid. Hopefully the Pell Grant and dept scholarships help me out for a nearly free education.

After waiting over half an hour on the phone, I found that the Golden Oaks and Tigers scholarships have been completely canceled. Instead they will have a 5k scholarship if you have an ACT score of 28 (1250 CR&M SAT) for the Tiger Excellence Award. Instead of Golden Oaks, they will have a 10k scholarship for ACT scores of 30-32 (13something-1430 CR&M SAT); this scholarship will be called the Academic Scholars Program. They will post the info up in like a week.

That really sucks.

Wow, that just rained on my parade. Hopefully if I score well enough on the upcoming ACTs, and apply for some of the departmental scholarships that should cover most of the tuition. I do like the sound of the OOS waiver for non-petE states though…

I mean if you can get the new Academic Scholars Program, that would be like 10k out of let’s say 21k to deal with for out of state students. Then if someone has an EFC of 0, hopefully they can get like 6-7k in grants. Hopefully, if the applicant is a female minority in good academic standing, then they could get merit scholarships to get the entire COA covered.

For Engineering, see:

I hope they have the same scholarships this year.

It would be really unfortunate if LSU scaled back their OOS scholarships. The Golden Oaks was a major factor in the decision to attend LSU for a few top students that we know.

The proposed budget cuts outlined by the Chancellor call for $5 million in scholarship reductions, however, there is no mention of eliminating or reducing the Tiger or Golden Oaks awards in the proposed reductions. Also, in the past, I have received inaccurate information about scholarship awards on more than one occasion from the Financial Aid office at LSU. I don’t want to falsely raise hopes, but I would wait to see what info is posted on their website in the next week or so before making any conclusions.

great user name

do you know what you have to have to get the in-state cost for out of state?

^ It used to be the Tiger Scholarship and you needed:

If not that, then you need to have a 13??-1430 CR and M combined SAT score for the Academic Scholars Program, which gives you 10k, which basically reduces your tuition to in-state. You might want to contact the department you are looking into about any other options. Engineering seems to have really good ones (hopefully they still do). If all else, goes wrong, try to apply for Louisiana residency once you get there, and after a year, you should get in-state tuition

I was pretty sure at first, since two finaid representatives and the head of engineering did told me so. However, I would wait until they post it online (near the end of August) to see what exactly they plan to do with their scholarships (as Psi mentioned).

Hmm at least there will be something if they add those new different scholarships. Scholarships were the single biggest factor for me choosing LSU, so I guess I got lucky with my timing.

Wait is Asian considered as a minority at LSU? None of their engineering scholarships specified. Usually it means black, Hispanic, or Native American. Please tell me they don’t mean URM, or it will

Well this sucks. LSU was not on my list, but I was thinking about it because I would get free tuition, but now it looks like a no go for sure, already have near full tuition at Alabama, hope for close to in-state rates at FSU.

Do any of you know if there are any financial benefits to joining the Honors College? I know you would get first pick at classes and live in West Lavile or Acadia, but do they give scholarships as well?

There seems to be a lot of soggy parades after these budget cuts.

Thank you Ron, and stay classy.

^ Yes, actually. I just looked it up. I just hope this is representative of 2011. Yea, damn those budget cuts.

Are you considered a minority at LSU if you are Asian? Please tell me that you are.

Unfortunately, LSU has indeed eliminated the Tiger Scholar and Golden Oaks scholarships for the 2011-12 year:

Well at least Asians are considered minorities here for those minority scholarships (not URM, however).

Damn, I have to retake the SATs for the Chancellor’s.
