Good Books/movies?

I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for books/movies that would be revealing in what military life/academy life/combat life is like on a regular basis. I bet this would be a good thread for people with questions to refer too.

There is a great book about West Point called Absolutely American by David Lipsky. He is a Rolling Stone columnist who followed one class at WP through all four years. It is a great read.

You may want to look through an earlier thread. There's some good stuff in there. And someplace close to this thread is another listing all kinds of movies. Really a great list. Check it out.

Also look on down the main thread page to see another book topic posted by LFWBDad. Your parents might be very interested in the book he tells about.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread. Just thought I'd let you guys know that you might find what you're looking for in there faster.

Lee Child writes great books about an ex-west pointer, they don't have much to do with the academy, but they are still good.

The Nightingale's Song was also excellent

Ooops. Found the movie one.

"Surviving West Point", the National Geographic series is available on dvd and definitely worth it. Here's a link to the best price I found.

And on occasion the Military Channel runs a series called "Inside America's Military Academies" - also well worth the time.

"Absolutely American" has a cult following on this board. You may also want to look at each service academy's website to see what books they sell in their gift shops that are specific to that particular academy. You will find many.

Inside America's Military Academies

It will be on the Military Channel 2/11/06.

Years ago I saw a documentary on cable that was all about USNA. I've never heard anything about it since then. The title was something like "Navy Blue" or "Blue & Gold" (not to be confused w/ the feature film of that title). I sure would like to find it again - has anyone heard of it?

I didn't mention this in our earlier thread, but I've been curious about it since no one else mentioned it either. Searches at Amazon, etc. have turned up nothing. It's driving me crazy because I know I watched it (must be at least ten years ago) but sure can't find any info on it now.

Anyone seen this one from the History Channel? Our Century: U.S. Naval Academy: 150 Years in Annapolis (April, 2005 DVD)

wondering if it was any good.

bz -
Maybe that was this one:
U.S. Naval Academy: 150 Years in Annapolis (1995)
listed at amazon here:

Hmmm, maybe both those are the same, except original was VHS (1995) and then the History Channel put it on DVD in 2005?? Anyone know the deal or seen either?

Thanks Dad2b - it was really focused on Plebe life at USNA I believe. But the one you reference looks good too. Might just have to add it to our collection!

"First Class" and "In the Men's House" are two books writen by female members of the first class of women at USNA and USMA
