Can anyone give this rising junior good recommendations for books to read over the summer? Thanks.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

“100 Years of Solitude” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
“The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini
“Wuthering Heights” by Emile Bronte

I agree with Dorian Gray. Great book.

Godel Escher Bach

“Manhunt” by James L. Swanson. It’s about the Lincoln assassination an the twelve-day search for John Wilkes Booth and his conspirators. I started the book recently and it is outstandingly written!

I came here to suggest Picture of Dorian Gray and was very pleasantly surprised to find it here.

I’m also a fan of Russian lit (Anna Karenina, if you’re up for a long read, or Crime and Punishment), and if you’re cool with a creepy factor, Lolita or The Bell Jar are great.

if you’re into nonfiction check our The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe, you can read about the start of the manned space program just as it’s ending… and it’s VERY captivating
I would second One Hundred Years of Solitude, though that book is certainly unique in terms of style and readability
And my fiction recommendation would probably be The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, it may be geared towards a slightly younger audience but it’s a wonderful read! A perfect summer “long book”.

Another nonfiction is The Social Animal by david brooks who describes life sort of and all the things about it through a sociological, psychological viewpoint. However he makes up a fictional couple in the book to make it readable. Great way to write a book.

Finnegans Wake, a nice light beach read.

Read it… if you dare.
