Good Books to Read this Summer!

I saw Gravity's Rainbow at the bookstore... one of the clerks recommended me to buy a study guide because there are a lot of (obscure?) references used in the novel.

Anyway, I just finished Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. If you wanted to read a Gothic (romantic) novel, go for it.

As for Catcher in the Rye and Great Gatsby, as others have recommended (and will eventually), people commonly run into these books during their high school careers so maybe get a head start on that.

"I actually really liked Flowers for Algernon. I thought it was very sweet. Other books along the lines of FoA would be The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I think those have already been mentioned, but they're good."

LOL those three are some of my favorite books... esp. TCIOTDITNT.

My Sister's Keeper (amazing book)
The Pact (again amazing!)
Prep

IF YOU ARE BORED DURING THE SUMMER I WILL TELL YOU THE SECRET BOOK..................................... "This Book Will Change Your Life" buy it and do everything in it.....that should keep you occupied :)

Those are the best 2 Jodi Picoult books! Enjoy!

American Psycho
Candide
Crime and Punishment
Republic
Paradise Lost
The Jungle
The Pearl
The Inferno
To Kill a Mocking Bird
Fahrenheit 451
and rereading The Art of War and The Prince

Thats my list for the summer so far plus a couple business related books.

it's been mentioned several times before, but I'd also like to recommend

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

and if you liked that book, you should also read Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut

These books are recommended for anyone in HS or college:

-Catcher in the Rye
-Farenheit 451
-1984
-Animal Farm
-The Great Gatsby

All of these made me think. Now that I'm in college I don't have that much time to read (also I started writing in September 2004 so I've been using most of my time to write instead of read these days). However, I occasionally sneak a book in. Right now I'm rereading the Chronicles of Narnia, which I last read in 1995. My pastor at my church gave a sermon and said in it that they related so much to the Bible and that he just re-read them himself to see the connection. I'm on the second one now, reading them if I get a spare moment at night. If you're into Bible study at all, I recommend this. There are supplementary references on Narnia-Bible similarities out there, your Church library might even have some. (My best friend just read these books for the first time and he too was impressed that something that can be understood by an eight year old can have such a deeper meaning for an older guy)

Lord of the Flies was not good at all...

The Five People you meet in Heaven - Mitch Albom...

Yes, Albom did plagarize a story last year, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't "Wednesday's with Morrie"

the other boleyn girl (more likely to enjoy this if you're a girl)

catch 22 (longest time it ever took for me to read a book, tedious but rewarding)

hunt up some classics, like pride and prejudice, tale of two cities, grapes of wrath, etc. these very long books will keep you occupied for awhile.

tale of two cities sucks. I would've killed myself were it not for the last chapter or two which are actually interesting. The whole books is blabber and drudgery, I truly have come to hate Dickens regardless of how much of a "genius" he was....

I haven't finished it yet, but I like it so far- Ishmael.

megaman: Agreed wholeheartedly. A Tale of Two Cities was very boring. The last few chapters were good, though. I had to read it last year for a summer assignment.

1984 is an amazing book; a must read for anyone.
Les Miserable-Victor Hugo
Animal Farm-George Orwell(Another good read!)

I barely read for fun during last (junior) year.

I checked out Black Boy and finished it in two days; it was just that good.

On the Road was interesting, as well.

I have to say that A Tale of Two Cities did not age well. A Christmas Carol, on the other hand, is timeless.

this is my summer reading list, although i'll have to add more because i've read most of them already:

-Catch-22
-Cat's Cradle
-The Virgin Suicides
-Brave New World
-1984
-A Clockwork Orange

they are all incredible books. other great ones i've read recently:

-Farenheit 451
-The Catcher in the Rye
-The Picture of Dorian Gray
- Lord of the Flies (not for everyone, but i loved it)

Lord of the Flies sucked. Too unrealistic.

^ agreed. Lord of the Flies is another one of those crappy classics which I have no idea how it became so popular....

Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote

You know, if you're still bored after you've read all this literature, you can read some of my summer books. I've got loads. I'll even be really generous and let you write some of the assignments, too. :P

I recommend:
Frankenstein by Mary Shelly - one of the best books I have ever read.
The Jungle by Upton Bell Sinclair - easy read, very interesting.
Crime and Punishment by F. Dostovsky - which I am currently reading at the moment.
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote - If you saw the movie Capote and liked it, then you will really like the book.
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee - Which is a a fairly easy read but very good.
Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beacher Stowe - A very good book as well.
Freakanomics by Steven Levit - very interesting book, if you are into politics then this would be a good book to read. I read it in one day.
Lies and the lying liars who tell them and the Truth With Jokes both by Al Franken - very funny if you are into politics especially the first one.
