Good cell phone coverage at MIT?

Which carriers have good cell phone coverage at MIT? I hear that AT&T is not so good.

I switched from Verizon to AT&T a few years ago. Both worked fine for me. I remember people saying that AT&T used to be bad before they installed some additional cell towers nearby, so you might just have old data.

Anyone know about T-Mobil? They have a great family plan.

D said AT&T worked fine during CPW.

I’ve heard terrible things about T-Mobile on campus. Most people seem to go with Verizon or AT&T.

Ok. Thank you.

My D has never had a problem with Sprint coverage.

Plus, if you have a smartphone, you’d most likely always be connected to Wi-Fi anyway (entire campus is covered). So if you’re in a part of the building with no reception, you can still send/receive emails, etc.

We have the T-Mobile family plan and the coverage is terrible. My son lives on East Campus and when he wants to make a call home, he has to go outside his dorm to get reception. This is a pain, especially when it’s cold. Also, the connection is frequently dropped. I’m switching to another carrier over the summer when everyone has more time to deal with it.

@pertolet, you could also look into getting a phone on T-Mobile that supports calling over Wi-Fi (UMA). That way, your son could make phone calls over Wi-Fi (within any building, anywhere on campus) regardless of whether or not there is cell reception. This deducts minutes from your plan just as if you made the calls over the cellular network. There is no additional charge.

Verizon’s great – I’ve never had a problem with getting service on campus. Sometimes I even get signal when I’m in the basement tunnels.

@petrolet, My Son is going to be a freshman at MIT, hopefully living at East Campus next fall. What carrier worked well for your Son?
