So right now, I know 6 schools to which I'm applying, but my parents have asked me to add to my list a good cheap school, just as a backup.

So far, my list is:
UChicago (a very far reach)
American
U Minnesota
U Washington
U Rochester
U Connecticut

I'm looking to study Political Science.

The school that my parents used as an example was University of Wyoming, which is 10k out-of-state. What are some schools that either have low tuition, or would give me a lot of financial aid/merit scholarships, and have a decent poli sci program?

I hear that University at Albany is big in political science. I saw an earlier chances thread that you made with 3.15 gpa and like 1400 SAT. You are eligible for $5k per year with a scholarship at albany. The tuition is 10k out-of state as well.

Merit Awards

De Paul University Chicago

Where do you live? If your state flagship is a good school, you might consider it.

Just based on your 1470 SAT, if I read that correctly, you would be guarenteed full in state tuition + 4500 to Ohio University in Athens. The price would be around 13 thousand a year, including room and board. They have a solid Pol. Sci. department. I applied there and I just got my 14k/year scholarship offer in the mail.

Yes. In-state schools are typically the cheapest. Depending on where you live, you're probably good material for your state's flagship.

And if it helps any, I know someone who went to Wyoming and loved it. I've also heard great things about Albany for PS.

You might also want to look at some LACs. Denison, Wooster and Ohio Wesleyan are pretty good with merit aid and your ECs and standardized test results compare favorably.

Elon University in North Carolina is a gem of a school. Lots of kids with high SAT scores there as well. Strong in political science and they have a HUGE number of kids who study overseas every year. They are VERY inexpensive and one of the best values in the nation, if you ask me. Plus its a gorgeous campus....and the people are very, very nice.

Just to confirm my stats:

1460 SAT
-770 CR
-690 M

3.15 Unweighted GPA 9-11

Excellent ECs

Like I recommended before, you should consider your state flagship.

U Arizona, Northern Arizona, and Arizona State all have good poly. sci. programs and all have incredibly cheap (in comparison) tuition for out-of-staters ($14,000 to 17,000 total yearly tuition), all with really good merit scholarships.

If want cheap + good in combination consider your state's best university. If know can make scholarships then choose outside.

Handyandy58,

I've already applied to my state flagship, but it's not exactly inexpensive.

In most cases, it's hard to find a better deal than public schools in your state, especially if you're an outstanding student.
