Good college essay idea?

Prompt for Common App: A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.

I was thinking of writing about the diversity in my own family. I live in two households, my mom's and my dad's, because my parents are divorced. My parents' income difference is very significant, and my I have gone through many "rough patches" of living with my father. We even lived in a hotel for a month because he couldn't afford a house or apartment. My dad barely qualifies as "middle class", is self-employed, and has been unemployed in the past due to illness. My mom, on the other hand, has had a steady job for over 20 years that pays an income well above the average middle class family.

Does this adequately respond to the prompt? And does it show the diversity in my life? Please help!

This is an excellent subject to cover. Which parent provides child support and how does that affect them economically?

I think you should write this from your perspective. In child custody cases the judge makes a decision without a jury on the presumption of “best interests”. The child is often too young to factor into the process.

My parents have joint custody, but my dad pays child support. I was three when my parents were divorced and like you said, too young to have any effect on the case. Should I include that in my essay? Thanks so much for the feedback.
